Cody Mathewson joined the staff of head coach David Nicholson in 2024 after a four-year running career at the University of Southern Maine.
A native of nearby Lebanon and four-year cross country and track & field athlete at Lyman Memorial High School, Matthewson ran cross country and was a distance runner with the track & field program at Southern Maine from 2019 through the fall of 2023.
As a  three-time cross country captain, Mathewson was a member of two LEC championship cross country teams (2019, 2021), earning All-LEC honors three times. On the 2021 LEC title team (one year after Covid cancelled the LEC meet), Mathewson helped the Huskies to a fifth straight conference title by finishing 12th overall as his team’s No. 3 runner en route to second-team All-LEC honors. Two weeks later, he gained All-East Region honors with a 34th-place finisher as his team’s top finisher as the Huskies placed eighth among 31 scoring teams.
In his final two cross country seasons in 2022 and 2023, Mathewson was USM’s No. 2 runner at the LEC Championships, placing 14th and repeating All-LEC second-team recognition in 2022 and placing sixth overall as a fifth-year senior in 2023 as a first-team All-LEC qualifier in helping the Huskies to second place.
In track & field, Mathewson ran the 3000 steeplechase, 3000, 5000 and 10,000, placing fourth outdoors in the spring of 2021 in both the 3000 steeplechase and 5000 at the LEC Championships, and third indoors in 2021-22 in the 5000 and fourth with the 4x800 relay in the LEC meet. As a senior in 2022-23, Mathewson placed fifth indoors in the 5000 and third outdoors in the 10,000 in the conference meet.
In 2022-23, Mathewson interned as an assistant track & field coach at Gorham (ME) High School.
An LEC All-Academic qualifier and USM scholar-athlete, Mathewson graduated in December of 2023 with a B.S. Degree in Health Sciences and minor in athletic coaching.
