MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior second baseman Jackie Lewis (Mystic) had three hits and drove in five runs and junior lefty pitcher Morgan Sanson (Thomaston) had a win and a save when the Eastern Connecticut State University softball team swept Wesleyan University in a non-conference doubleheader, 9-3, 5-3, Wednesday afternoon.
Lewis drove in three runs in the first game with a double in a six-run third inning and had an RBI single when Eastern scored three runs in the third inning of the second game and knocked in the final two with a single in the sixth inning of the nightcap.
Sanson (4-2) pitched the first five shutout innings in the opener and led 6-0 before Wesleyan (8-12) got three back in the sixth on three hits (two doubles) and a walk. She was lifted after walking the leadoff batter in the seventh. She picked up her second save in the second game in relief of junior righty Haleigh Cardello (Litchfield, NH) when she got the final two outs of the sixth when the Cards cut Eastern's lead to 5-3. Cardello (3-2) allowed three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Junior shortstop Sara Pisanelli (Wallingford) had a two-run single in Eastern's three-run sixth inning in the opener. Lewis and freshman first baseman Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange) each had three hits on the day and sophomore rightfielder Alexis Tyrrell (Torrington) had two hits, scored three runs and stole two bases.
Eastern hosts the University of Massachusetts Boston Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Little East Conference doubleheader. The Beacons are two-time defending LEC tournament champions.
