MANSFIELD, Conn. – The SUNY New Paltz women's lacrosse team shrugged off four early Eastern Connecticut State University goals by limiting the Warriors to one in the second half in a 24-10 non-conference victory Tuesday evening at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
Eastern (0-7) led 3-0 just 2:26 into play and 4-0 after eight minutes before New Paltz (4-2) took command. Tristan Kijak's (Windsor) fourth goal of the game on a free-position shot gave the Warriors their final lead, 7-6, 16 minutes into the match before the Hawks answered with the next three – two by Amy Hofer – and seven of the final nine of the half to take a four-goal, 13-9 lead into the break.
Leading 14-10 a minute into the second half, New Paltz shut the Warriors out the rest of the way, running off the final ten goals, outshooting Eastern 27-2 in the second half and 51-19 in the game.
Six different players contributed goals to the team's 10-0 scoring onslaught, with Hofer and Tara Bovich each picking up their 20th goals of the season in that 21-minute barrage.
Bovich and Hofer led the Hawks with five goals and two assists apiece and Jennifer O'Leary chipped in four goals and an assist. Kijak (5 goals) and Alyssa Powers (Ellington) combined to score all but one of Eastern's goals.
With 14 draw controls, Sarah Raynock paced New Paltz to a decisive 26-10 advantage in draw controls. Katie Zito complemented her three goal, three assist performance with five ground balls and Maddy Carullo had three goals, one assist and five ground balls off the bench. Both are freshmen.
Haley Timarky needed only two saves -- allowing only five goals over the final 49 minutes – to record the win.
Eastern visits Mt. Holyoke College March 27 at 5:30 p.m. in a non-conference match.
