Box Score NORTON, Mass. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men's soccer team forced overtime with 22 seconds left in regulation on a goal by junior forward Matt Furman (Montville) as the Warriors managed a 1-1 double-overtime non-conference tie with Wheaton College Wednesday afternoon at Keefe Field.
Last year's Little East Conference scoring champion, junior forward Matt Furman (Montville) scored his third goal of the season on a 15-yard blast on a pass from sophomore midfielder Kyle Surprenant (Coventry). With time winding down, Surprenant attempted a crossing pass to Furman that was deflected. Surprenant collected a rebound and sent another pass to Furman, who took one touch and sent the ball inside the far post.
Will Nesbitt's header 13 minutes into the second half had provided Wheaton (1-2-2) with the first goal of the match.
In overtime, Wheaton possessed the two best scoring chances but shots by Travis Blair and David Turina went wide of the goal.
Carl Appel (West Windsor, NJ) made eight saves for Eastern in net.
Eastern (3-1-1) is ranked No. 7 in this week's NSCAA New England rankings, up two spots from last week.
After going 1-8-1 against Wheaton in the first ten matches of the series, Eastern tied the Lyons in overtime for the second straight season.
The pre-season favorite to win the LEC regular season, Eastern opens conference play Saturday at 1 p.m. against Rhode Island College at Nevers Field. The match is a re-match of last year's LEC semifinals, which ended in a scoreless overtime tie. Rhode Island advanced to the final on penalty kicks.
