Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie MacLeod (Northfield) posted her third shutout in as many starts to help the Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a scoreless overtime draw with Wesleyan University Wednesday night at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
Playing with three freshmen and a sophomore among its five starting backs, Eastern (2-1-1) has allowed only one goal this season. MacLeod, a second-year starter in net has yet to give up a goal in over 270 minutes this year. After unloading 21 shots and scoring three times against MacLeod a year ago, Wesleyan (0-1-1), was limited to 11 shots Wednesday, with MacLeod stopping all six that landed on net.
Eastern's starting defense in front of MacLeod includes senior Rachel Cutler (Guilford), sophomore Whitney Mantel (Stamford) and freshmen Geo Karahalios (South Windsor), Kaitlin Thibodeau (Tolland) and Samantha Bottaro (Southington).
Eastern had a handful of scoring opportunities that did not materialize. Senior forward Taylor Buchanan (Ellington), who missed all of last year with an ACL injury, nearly ended the match three minutes into overtime, but her free kick from 25 yards beat Wesleyan freshman keeper Rachel Hobart high but bounced off the cross bar and travelled harmlessly out of the box.
Two minutes after Buchanan's potential game-ending bid, senior midfielder Kelly Wallace (South Windsor) got a step on a defender in the box and let loose a left-footed shot which cleared the cross bar.
Wesleyan, which has won just one of the last seven meetings (1-3-3) against Eastern after shutting out the Warriors the first four times the program met, had its best chance 8:30 into overtime when junior forward Kelly Doyle slid a low hard shot at goal from inside the box, but MacLeod was in position to scoop up the shot.
Eastern outshot Wesleyan 17-11 and held a slim 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Hobart made three saves over the final 65 minutes in her collegiate debut after sophomore starter Jessica Tollman made the same number in the first half.
Eastern hosts Rhode Island College in its Little East Conference opener Saturday at 1 p.m. at Thomas Nevers Field.
