Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. -- Senior midfielder Chelsea Downer (Colchester) scored her second goal of the season to snap RPI's streak of 269 scoreless minutes in Eastern Connecticut State University's 1-0 women's soccer win over the Engineers Saturday on the second day of the Valiant Classic, hosted by Manhattanville College.
The match between the first-time opponents was stopped after 72 minutes and 30 seconds of play due to unplayable field conditions caused by heavy rain.
Senior keeper Macdenzie MacLeod (Northfield) made one save to post her second shutout in as many starts this year for Eastern (2-1-0), which had its scheduled match against MIT postponed due to thunderstorms.
Downer scored the only goal of the match on a cross from junior midfielder Tamar Merheb (Bethel), who was credited with her first point of the season. RPI (2-2-0) was coming off a 5-0 victory over host Manhattanville College Friday night and had not been scored upon since allowing a goal in the 64th minute of a 1-0 season-opening loss to Emmanuel College.
Eastern hosts Wesleyan University Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
