Roberts, Plymouth Ends Eastern Softball's LEC Winning Streak at 29

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PLYMOUTH, NH – Sophomore Whitney Roberts pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the second game as Plymouth State University snapped Eastern Connecticut State University's 29-game Little East Conference softball winning streak, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Panther Park.

In the first game, senior third baseman Arielle Cooper (Mystic), junior centerfielder Mattie Brett (Waterford) and sophomore first baseman Sam Rossetti (Shelton) all had three hits, Rossetti driving in five runs to lead Eastern (18-8, 5-1 LEC) to an 8-1 victory over Plymouth (16-11, 3-3 LEC).

In the first game, Eastern  went ahead for good, 4-1, with three runs in the second inning by scoring all of its runs after the bases were empty with two out. Freshman shortstop Alyssa Hancock (Waterford), batting ninth, homered to start the rally, and Cooper, Brett and Rossetti followed with singles, Rossetti plating two runs.

In addition to the two-run single, Rossetti drove in Cooper with the first run of the game in the first and later drilled a two-run double in the fourth. Cooper led off the game with a single, singled and scored in the second and had an RBI double and scored in the sixth.

Senior Christine Aker (Milford) won her fifth game in as many decisions in the  opener, tossing a complete-game five-hitter. She fanned three and walked one. After surrendering a two-out RBI single in the first, Akcer gave up only three hits the rest of the way. In the fourth, Plymouth had a one-out single, then a double, but Akcer got an outfield fly ball and line drive to first to end the threat.

Roberts (8-3) shut down Eastern in the nightcap,  outdueling Eastern sophomore Erin Miller (Waterford) to hand the Warriors their first LEC loss after 29 straight victories (21 in the regular season) dating back to 2011.

Cooper opened the second game with Eastern's only run --  her 13th home run of the season – but Roberts shut out Eastern the rest of the way, retiring the final 11 batters in order.

Batting .372 as a team entering the  doubleheader, Eastern managed only freshman DH Alyssa White's (Colchester) two-out double later in the first inning, a two-out single by Brett in the third, and a one-out double by Megan Godwin (Manchester) in the fourth. The hit was the 100th in the three-year career of Godwin.

Given a 1-0 lead before taking the mound, Miller surrendered three straight singles in the bottom of the first as the Panthers scored the only runs they needed. After the first, Miller allowed only two singles in the fifth (one was a bunt) and two hits in the sixth.

Roberts fanned two and walked one, while Miller pitched a complete-game seven-hitter. She struck out three and hit a batter.

Neither team made an error in the doubleheader.

Eastern hosts Massachusetts Dartmouth in a conference doubleheader Tuesday at 5 p.m.
