Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Junior righty Chuck Vogt (Windsor Locks) pitched a four-hitter over the first five innings for his first collegiate win, and junior second baseman Corey Keane (Tolland) and senior DH Nik Ververis (Plainfield) each drove in a run to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team to a 9-5 win over Greenville College in its first game in Florida Saturday morning.
At right: Against No. 13 Rowan, Mike Vaccarelli slugged the team's first HR of the year.
In a 12-6 loss to No. 13 nationally-ranked Rowan University (4-0) in the afternoon, Nick Kreiger and Casey Grimes drove in runs with singles in the second inning that gave the Profs the lead for good in a 12-6 win over the Warriors.
Against Greenville (2-7), Eastern's (2-2) Vogt (1-1) allowed only two earned runs in his second collegiate start while fanning six, walking two and hitting a batter and departed with a 7-4 lead. Vogt set down 11 in order after getting the first out of the fifth, but No. 3 hitter Tim Osborne made the Warriors and Vogt pay for a two-out error when he pulled his second home run of the season over the right field fence.
Senior first baseman Gavin Lavallee (New Milford), Keane and senior third baseman Mike Vaccarelli (Wolcott) each picked up two hits. Keane scored three times and Lavallee and Vaccarelli scored twice each.
Against Rowan, senior righty Greg Porter (Mystic) (1-1) pitched the first four innings as the first of five Eastern pitchers and departed on the short end of a 6-5 score. While the Warriors were limited to one (unearned) run on five hits over the final 5 2/3 innings by two Rowan relievers, the Profs tacked on six insurance runs over their final four at-bats. Porter allowed six hits and four earned runs with two strikeouts and five walks.
After Rowan touched Porter for two runs in the top of the first, Eastern took its only lead with three in the bottom of the inning. The first five batters reached safely against junior righty Dylan Johannink, with Vaccarelli belting the team's first home run of the season – a two-run blast to left after junior centerfielder Joe Perez (North Branford) opened the inning with a single. Senior shortstop Brendan Lynch (Wethersfield) then singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on Lavallee's single and scored the go-ahead run when Keane's ground ball to short was misplayed.
Grimes collected five of Rowan's 17 hits. He drove in four runs with a double and home run. Vaccarelli and Keane each had two of Eastern's 12 hits. Vaccarelli drove in two runs with a first-inning home run that helped the Warriors take their only lead, 3-2.
On the day, sophomore Derek Allen (Wallingford) recorded his first two collegiate hits with pinch singles in each game.He had a two-out single in the top of the ninth against Greenville and singled with a runner aboard in the eighth and came around to score against Rowan. Keane and Vaccarelli each had four hits (including a double) and two RBI in two games. Keane also walked twice and was hit by pitch and scored four runs. Vaccarelli scored three times.
Eastern faces Denison University (1-3) Sunday at 3 p.m. at Winter Haven. The Big Red opened their Florida season Saturday with a 13-5 loss to Trinity College.
