Baseball: Warriors’ Seventh Inning Surge Tops Wesleyan, Eastern Cruises to 12-1 Win

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Eastern Connecticut State University's baseball team turned a close contest into a rout, with a highlight-reel homer, defeating Wesleyan University 12-1 Tuesday afternoon at Dresser Diamond.

Game Information:
  • Score: Eastern 12, Wesleyan 1
  • Records: Eastern (14-3) | Wesleyan (6-12)
  • Location: Dresser Diamond (Middletown, Conn.)
Key Moment:
  • Eastern erupted for eight runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a Hank Penders' (Wethersfield) three-RBI triple and Danny DiNorcia's (Naples, FL) two-RBI homer to cap the commanding 12-1 victory.
How it Happened:
  • After a silent two innings, traction picked up in the third as Wesleyan's William Moore singled to center field, RBI (2-2 KBKB), Dylan Harrington scored to give the Cardinals the lead, leaving the Warriors trailing 1-0.
  • Eastern finally picked up momentum after falling scoreless for four innings. Sparked by a Matthew Carrera (Mount Sinai, NY) single to center field RBI, Devin Kulas (Southington) scored to put Eastern on board, tying up Wesleyan 1-1.
  • With the momentum, Penders got on base and shortly after, Lucas Malave (Toms River, NJ) singled to left field, resulting in Penders finding home to put the Warriors in front, and shortly after, a two-RBI single from Dylan Jackson (Manchester) brought Malave home. To cap, Ian Moser (Bellingham, MA) singled, and DiNorcia slid home for a 4-1 Eastern lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
  • After no response from the Cardinals, Eastern closed out the competition in the seventh. DiNorcia opened the inning with a walk with Teige Kimbler (Albany, NY) following before DiNorcia scored on a wild pitch, which would be the turning point of the competition.
  • With the 5-1 lead, Jackson singled to center field, driving Kimbler home for a 6-1 lead, and shortly after, Moser reached on fielders choice, keeping the inning alive with Cameron Forte (Easton) walking and Moser advancing to second. Penders then tripled to right field, clearing the bases with Carrera, Forte, and Moser all sliding home and giving the Warriors a 9-1 lead.
  • With the wide lead, the Warriors pushed the win with a Malave single, which scored Penders (10-1), and wrapped with a homer from DiNorcia, which sealed the 12-1 victory.
