Softball Shocks UW-Stevens Point, 8-6

Box Score

CLERMONT, Fla. --  Senior Stephanie Johnson (Plantsville) capped a four-run seventh inning rally with a two-out, two-run double that completed a comeback from six runs down as the Eastern Connecticut State University softball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 8-6, Wednesday morning at the National Training Center.

In the first game of the morning against SUNY Plattsburgh, sophomore Samantha Moss pitched a complete-game one-hitter and SUNY Plattsburgh scored both of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning in a 2-1 victory that handed Eastern (2-8) its fourth straight loss.

Freshman lefty Summer Cipriani (North Stonington) kept Eastern within striking distance by shutting out UW-Stevens Point (7-6) over the final 3 1/3 innings and freshman Tyler Keegan (Middletown) slugged a two-run home run with no one out in the top of the seventh that pulled Eastern even at 6-all. With one out, junior Shannon Martin (Wethersfield) and freshman Alicia White (Colchester) singled off freshman lefty reliever Sydney Gorges (4-2). Gorges recorded the second out with an infield pop, but Johnson followed by drilling a ball into the gap to plate pinch runner Taylor Smyth (Meriden) and White.

As the fourth Eastern pitcher, Cipriani  (1-2) allowed only two hits without a walk to gain credit for her first collegiate win.

Sophomore starting righty Emily Komornik (Shelton) and Martin were chased early when the Pointers erupted for six runs in their first two at-bats. Junior Erin Miller (Waterford) allowed two runs in the second but carried the Warriors into the fourth, recording the first out before Cipriani was given the ball.

Trailing 6-0, the Warriors got two back in the fourth on a single by Cipriani, a wild pitch, error and ground ball by freshman Gina Georgetti (Milford) which plated Cipriani and freshman pinch runner  Samantha Bardos (Norwalk). Eastern added single runs in the fifth and sixth, setting the stage for the four-run seventh.

Sophomore Alyssa Hancock (Waterford), junior Sam Rossetti (Shelton), Keegan and Cipriani all had two hits for Eastern.

Eastern winds up its trip Thursday against Western New England (9 a.m.) and Hamilton College (11 a.m.).

Since losing the first five games in the series with Stevens Point, Eastern has won the last two.
