Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- Sophomore Alyssa Hancock (Waterford) drove in seven runs with four hits – all after two were out -- as the Eastern Connecticut State University softball team wrapped up its Florida trip with 5-2 wins over Western New England University and Hamilton College Thursday morning at the National Training Center.
At right: Alyssa Hancock
The wins are the second and third straight for Eastern (4-8), which split eight games in Florida. The Warriors lost four straight following an opening triumph but downed UW-Stevens Point in the second of two games Wednesday prior to Thursday's first sweep of the year.
Batting leadoff, Hancock helped Eastern rally from two runs down against Hamilton (1-4) by driving in the tying and go-ahead runs in a three-run fifth inning with a two-out, two-run double, then plated two insurance runs with another two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh.
In the first game against Western New England (3-6), Hancock belted a three-run home run with two out in the bottom of the fourth inning to stake the Warriors to a 5-1 lead over the Golden Bears. She also singled with two out in the sixth before being thrown out stealing.
Junior righty Erin Miller (Waterford) earned her second win in four decisions with a complete-game victory over Western New England, then nailed down the win against Hamilton by getting the final three outs for her first save of the year. Miller allowed ten hits against Western New England, but stranded ten. She fanned six and walked two. With Eastern leading 5-2 against Hamilton, Miller took over for sophomore Emily Komornik (Shelton) with a runner on first and none out in the seventh. Miller got a strikeout and two ground balls to end the game.
Against Hamilton, Komornik pitched three scoreless innings in relief of freshman starter Summer Cipriani (North Stonington) after the Warriors had fallen behind 2-0. Komornik struck out one and walked two.
Eastern took the lead for good against Western New England with a run in the third inning on a triple by senior Mattie Brett (Waterford) and passed ball before Hancock drove in three runs in the fourth with her first home run of the year.
In Florida, Hancock led Eastern with a .407 batting average and 20 total bases, with junior Shannon Martin (Wethersfield) at .381, senior Stephanie Johnson (Plantsville) .350 and junior Sam Rossetti (Shelton) at .348. Miller was 2-2 with a save and a 3.37 ERA.
Eastern opens its Little East Conference season with a March 29 doubleheader at Keene State College at 1 p.m.
