Box Score 2 BOSTON, Mass.-- The surging Eastern Connecticut State University softball team swept its fourth doubleheader this week, four pitchers limiting the University of Massachusetts Boston to eight hits as the Warriors made it 14 wins in their last 15 games with 4-0, 9-1 Little East Conference victories Saturday afternoon at the UMB Softball Field. The second game was stopped after six innings on account of the eight-run rule.
At right: Samantha Rentz
By sweeping, Eastern (14-9, 5-1 Little East) remained atop the conference with 2013 LEC tournament champion Western Connecticut, which dumped host Keene State College twice Saturday. Massachusetts Dartmouth dropped a game back with a pair of losses at Plymouth State University.
UMass Boston remains winless in six conference games and is 8-15 overall.
Junior first baseman Sam Rossetti (Shelton) was 5-for-8 with three RBI on the afternoon, and freshman outfielder Hannah Latham (Salem, NH) (4-for-8, three RBI) provided all the offensive support the Warriors would need, as Eastern Connecticut took game one 4-0 and game two 9-1 in six innings.
Game 1: Eastern Conn. 4, UMass Boston 0
Eastern scored four runs in the first four innings and sophomore Emily Komornik (Shelton) pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief for her third win in five decisions.
Komornik teamed with junior starter Erin Miller (Waterford) to allow just four hits and no runs in the contest. Komornik allowed just two hits and struck out three in relief, after Miller was pulled in the fourth. The Warriors' junior ace – in search of her her sixth straight win -- struggled with her control all game, giving up five walks over 3.1 innings.
The Warriors scored the only run they would need in the first inning, with the first of their four two-out runs. Senior centerfielder Mattie Brett (Waterford) singled to right field with two down and Rossetti followed with an RBI double over the right-fielder's head to give Eastern a 1-0 lead.
Eastern added two more in the third inning. Sophomore transfer third baseman Samantha Rentz (Griswold) singled and Rossetti registered her second double to put two runners in scoring position with two down. Latham followed with a single just over the third-base bag to score both runners and make it 3-0 Warriors.
The visitors tacked on a fourth run in the fourth, as Rentz singled through the middle to plate sophomore shortstop Alyssa Hancock (Waterford).
After Komornik retired the first nine batters she faced, UMass finally put some pressure on the Warriors in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Haley Dutton singled over the second baseman's head. She moved over to second on a groundout and tried to score all the way from second on an infield single from Lyndsey Capra, only to be thrown out to end the game on a strong throw from Hancock.
Game 2: Eastern Conn. 9, UMass Boston 1 (6)
The Warriors took advantage of three UMass Boston errors to score five unearned runs to remain perfect in 38 games against the Beacons in this series.
Rossetti and Latham combined for three of the team's four RBI, while freshmsn Samantha Valentine (Ridge, NY) and Summer Cipriani (North Stonington) combined to strike out seven batters.
Valentine gave up just one earned run and three hits over the first three innings, but Cipriani was credited with the victory in relief as she evens her record at 2-2. The lefty allowed only one hit in three innings with three strikeouts.
The Warriors raced out to another early lead, as they struck for three runs in the top of the first.
After a one-out single, a Beacons error opened the floodgates, as Rossetti and Latham each followed with RBI singles to make it 2-0. Eastern tacked on a third run with one out on a wild pitch on strike three.
Brett and Rossetti followed up the first inning with an RBI single apiece in the second inning to give the Warriors a 5-0 lead.
UMass Boston finally scratched across arun in the bottom of the third inning. Morse lined a single into left field, moved over to second on a wild pitch, to third on a groundout and then came home to score on a wild pitch with two down.
After the Warriors added another run in the fifth inning, they exploded for three more in the sixth-thanks to a pair of Beacons errors. With runners on second and third and no outs, Latham grounded into a fielder's choice, but the Beacons catcher wasn't able to hang on to the throw home, allowing the seventh Warriors run to score. The next batter hit into a second fielder's choice, but the throw home from the third baseman was well wide, allowing two more runs to cross the plate.
Eastern visits Massachusetts Dartmouth Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. conference doubleheader.
