NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Four-time defending regular-season champion Eastern Connecticut State University took over first place in the Little East Conference following an 8-0, 11-0 sweep of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Thursday afternoon. The second game was stopped in the sixth inning.
At right: Senior Stephanie Johnson and the Warriors had plenty to cheer about after they moved into sole possession of first place in the Little East Conference following Thursday's sweep of UMass Dartmouth.
A winner of 12 straight and 18 of 19, Eastern (19-9, 7-1 Little East) managed only one extra-base hit against UMass Dartmouth (8-16, 4-4 Little East) but was issued 20 walks and capitalized on ten errors to defeat the Corsairs for the 15th and 16th consecutive times.
Junior Erin Miller (Waterford) threw a three-hit shutout in the opener and freshman Samantha Valentine (Ridge, NY) a two-hit shutout in the nightcap. Miller fanned four and walked one and Valentine struck out three and walked two. Eastern has shut out UMass six times in the last nine meetings in the series.
Sophomore Samantha Rentz (Griswold) reached safely seven times in the doubleheader with two hits and five walks. Senior leftfielder Stephanie Johnson (Plantsville) had two hits in each game and drove in two runs and scored twice in the nightcap. Senior leadoff hitter Mattie Brett (Waterford) drove in three runs in the second game and sophomore Alicia White (Colchester) reached four times in the nightcap with two hits (including a double) and two walks and scored twice.
Eastern hosts Rhode Island College Saturday in a 2 p.m. Little East Conference doubleheader.
