Warriors Rout UMB; Gain Share of First Place

Box Score

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Sophomore center Lindsay Langenauer (Cromwell) recorded her first career double-double in her first start of the year with a career-high ten points and career-tying 11 rebounds to pace the Eastern Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 66-38 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston in a Little East Conference game Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.

Now 11-2 in its last 13 games, Eastern (15-6, 8-2 LEC) moves into a two-way tie for first place in the conference with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, which lost a 64-60 decision to the University of Southern Maine. UMass (13-8, 5-5 LEC), swept by Eastern in the regular-season pair for the second straight year, falls from a share of third place into a tie for fourth place with Keene State College. Four teams remain in the LEC regular season.

Having come off the bench in playing ten of the team's 20 games heading into Saturday, Langenauer was the only player in the game in double figures in rebounding in helping the Warriors double UMass Boston's rebounding total. The team's 18-8 advantage in offensive rebounds allowed it a 15-6 margin in second-chance points.

Ranked first in the LEC in three-point field goal percentage defense and second overall (behind UMB) in overall field goal percentage defense, Eastern held UMass to 22.7 percent shooting in the first half in rolling up a 31-15 halftime advantage. Langenauer scored all ten of her points in the first half and grabbed seven of her 11 rebounds over the first 20 minutes.

The Beacons managed just 29.2 percent from the floor in the game, missing all eight of their three-point field goals.  UMass was held without a field goal for the first 7:30 of the game and trailed 9-1 before sophomore guard Chantel Jordan (Brockton, MA) sank her only basket of the game. The Warriors answered back a minute later and moved out to a double-figure lead on a pair of free throws by Langenauer with 6:29 left that made it 19-8.

The Beacons got within single digits only once thereafter, the Warriors opening the second half on a 9-4 run that pushed the advantage to 21, 40-19, six minutes into the half. Four different players combined on those nine points , with senior guard Kristina Forsman (Newington) canning the first of her two second-half three-pointers in that stretch.

Junior forward Jill Ritrosky (Pittsfield, MA) led both teams with 13 points, and senior forward Shannon McCourt (New Fairfield) came off the bench for ten points and four rebounds. Senior guard Taylor McBride (Willimantic) moved to within six of 400 career assists with a game-high five to go along with five rebounds, Ritrosky adding four assists and four rebounds. Sophomore guard Jordyn Nappi (Southington) provided a spark off the bench with nine points, four rebounds and two assists without a turnover in 24 minutes.

Seeing game action for the first time this year while rehabilitating a knee injury, junior guard Megan Cardarelli (Manchester) had four points and a rebound in four minutes.

Senior center Kirsten Morrison led UMB with 11 points and sophomore guard Mallory Nelson had ten. Junior forward Olivia Murphy – the team's top rebounding (10.5) and second-leading scorer (13.9)  who had 14 points and 15 rebounds against Eastern Jan. 10 – was held to four points and three rebounds. Freshman starting guard Grace Geary -- who leads the team in scoring and assists -- did not play.

Eastern hosts Keene State College Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
