NEWPORT, R.I. – Junior shortstop Alyssa Hancock (Waterford) had six hits, scored five runs and stole seven bases to lift the Eastern Connecticut State University softball team to a 6-2, 9-5 non-conference doubleheader sweep of Salve Regina University Thursday afternoon at Toppa Field.
Hancock was 3-for-4 in each game, doubling in the nightcap for Eastern (15-3), a winner of nine straight. She scored three runs and stole four bases in the opener and scored twice, drove in a run and swiped three bags in the nightcap and remains perfect this year on 23 stolen base attempts.
Eastern scored six times in the top of the fifth inning of the second game to wipe out a one-run deficit, sophomore DH Kristyn Ryan (Barkhamsted) and senior centerfielder Shannon Martin (Wethersfield) belting three-run home runs in the inning. The homer was the second in as many games for Ryan and second in five games for Martin.
Senior righty Erin Miller (Waterford) pitched into the sixth to gain her sixth win in seven decisions in the opener, with junior righty Emily Komornik (Shelton) getting the final five outs for her first save. Miller did not allow a run after the Seahawks (10-12) scored twice in the first. Sophomore righty Samantha Valentine (Ridge, NY) pitched a complete-game 12-hitter in the second game, allowing only two earned runs, to improve her record to 6-2. The hosts had won six of their previous seven entering the day and drop to 3-14 all-time in this 17-game series with Eastern.
Eastern hosts Keene State College Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Little East Conference doubleheader. Eastern won last year's LEC regular-season title and Keene the tournament championship on the No. 1-seeded Warriors' field.
