Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior midfielder Jamie Belden (Middlebury) and sophomore forward Emily Becher (Brooklyn) each scored twice and two Eastern Connecticut State Univeristy goalkeepers combined on only one save as the Warriors defeated Johnson & Wales University for the ninth time in this nine-game series, 5-1, Tuesday night at the Scotts Athletic Complex.
The win is the first this year for Eastern following a season-opening, 1-1, overtime tie against visiting Albertus Magnus College Tuesday in a match where Belden's long free kick set up the tying goal inside the final five minutes.
Becher scored her eighth career game-winning goal in the final minutes of the first half to give Eastern a 2-1 lead. Johnson & Wales (0-2-0) had taken an early lead in the first two minutes on an Eastern turnover before Belden pulled Eastern even five minutes later when she converted the first of two penalty kicks in the game.
With Eastern leading 2-1 at halftime, Belden and Becher scored nine minutes apart to make it 4-1 and sophomore Rachel Berkowsky (Stoughton, MA) added the final goal with 13 minutes left. Freshman back Claire Newman (Cromwell) was credited with her first collegiate point with an assist on Becher's second-half goal.
Senior Rachel Skelton (East Lyme) and freshman Kayla Labrecque (Westhampton, MA) combined for the win in net, Skelton making the only save. Labrecque was making her collegiate debut.
Eastern outshot the Wildcats, 14-6. The early goal by Johnson & Wales was only the second in this nine-match series allowed by Eastern.
Becher's two goals give her 20 in her 22-game Eastern career. With 18 goals, she was named last year's Little East Conference Rookie-of-the-Year.
Eastern visits University of Saint Joseph's (CT) Sunday at 1 p.m.
