Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Junior guards Julia DePoi (Brookfield) and Jordyn Nappi (Southington) snapped out of extensive three-point shooting slumps, and because of it, the Eastern Connecticut State University women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak at the Tripp Athletic Center against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Wednesday night.
DePoi and Nappi, who had missed a combined 32 of 35 three-point shots over the previous four games, combined to nail nine of 19 as Eastern (9-4, 3-1 Little East) outscored UMass Dartmouth 9-4, 1-3 Little East) by 18 points in the second half en route to a 73-54 victory.
In a game featuring last year's LEC regular-season co-champions, Eastern won on the Corsairs' home court after losing each of the last four years. UMD had beaten Eastern in five of the previous eight meetings overall since ending a 32-game futility streak at the hands of the Warriors. The loss was only the second in eight home games this year for UMD. Eastern has won five of six.
DePoi was 4-of-8 from three-point range and finished with a career-high 21 points while Nappi was 5-of-11 from long range – scoring 16 of her 19 points in the second half – as Eastern tied its season-best with nine three-point field goals.
Leading by only two at halftime after allowing 12 points on 12 first-half turnovers, Eastern gave the ball away on three times in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the floor, and sinking six of 13 three-pointers to pull away. Nappi finished with 16 second-half points, DePoi chipping in ten.
The Warriors trailed by nine two minutes into the second quarter, but senior forward Jill Ritrosky (Pittsfield, MA) and DePoi kept the Warriors close by scoring 11 points each. The Warriors used a 15-5 run after trailing by nine to move into a one-point, 31-30, halftime lead, and never trailed in the second half.
With Eastern down by nine in the second quarter, Nappi began the momentum swing with a three-point field goal. DePoi converted a conventional three-point play two minutes later, then scored on a putback to cut the Corsair lead to three, 27-24. Ritrosky followed with five straight points with a bucket and three free throws to give the Warriors the lead for good.
Ritrosky finished with 16 points and six rebounds, while DePoi chipped in six rebounds and four assists to her game-high scoring total.
For UMass, three starters picked up their fourth personal fouls by the early moments of the fourth quarter as Eastern poured in 23 points over the final ten minutes. Senior Beth Castantini scored 12 of her team's first 14 points over the first seven minutes of the game, but was limited to only four the rest of the way in finishing with a team-high 16. Six-foot junior Megan Ronaghan was held 11 points shy of her team-leading average of 19, managing only eight.
Eastern hosts the University of Massachusetts Boston Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Little East game.
