Box Score WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – A double-teaming strategy by the Keene State College women's soccer team kept Eastern Connecticut State University junior scoring leader Emily Becher (Brooklyn) from managing even one shot in Saturday afternoon's key Little East Conference match at Thomas Nevers Field.
But it wasn't quite effective enough to prevent Becher from setting up a golden goal 6:28 into sudden death overtime as the Warriors displaced Keene (8-4-0, 3-1-0) atop the LEC standings with a 1-0 victory that extended Eastern's (8-2-2, 3-0-1 LEC) unbeaten streak this year to six (4-0-2) and its unbeaten streak in its last 15 LEC regular-season matches to 14-0-1.
Eastern sophomore keeper Kayla Labrecque (Westhampton, MA) kept the Warriors from trailing by making a career-high 14 saves – and junior back Krista Petersen (Wallingford) kept the game scoreless with 16 minutes left in regulation by clearing a shot by senior midfielder Brittany Tolla off the goal line – as Eastern shut out Keene for the third straight time in the regular season.
Becher, Eastern's team-leader in goals and points, was held without a shot for only the second time this year by the suffocating and overplaying defensive play of junior back Tori Laires and freshman back Nicole DeAlmedia, but she initiated the game-winning goal by battling Laires for the ball in the corner of Eastern's offensive third. Becher's throw-in from the left side went into the box to the foot of freshman reserve Linnea Reich (Middletown), who sent the ball back to Becher on the end line. Becher sent a left-footed cross to the middle of the box where sophomore forward Kaley Pratt (Milford, MA) beat her only defender with a sliding one-timer that creased the back of the net with 3:32 left in the first ten-minute overtime session.. The goal was the third of the season for Pratt, who converted her only shot attempt in 66 minutes off the bench and was credited with her first career game-winning goal.
Reich, who had logged only 22 minutes in three previous matches this year, played only in overtime to rest senior midfielder Joanna Weir (Hebron) and was credited with her first career point.
Keene, which would have had a virtual lock on the top seed in the LEC playoffs with a victory, outshot Eastern 2-to-1, forcing Labrecque to make a career-high save total to record her second overtime shutout in the last two starts.
Eight minutes after Petersen saved the day by clearing Tolla's bid off the back line, Keene had two tries to take the lead. After junior forward Taylor Farland hit the post, junior forward Katie Silegy headed the rebound from six yards, but it was aimed right at Labrecque.
Labrecque's finest save came midway through the first half, when she left her feet to knock away a 25-yard drive by Farland which was headed inside the right post. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Farland fed Silegy, who sped through the box – sidestepping two Eastern defenders – and ripped a shot from point blank range. Hustling out to cut down the angle, Labrecque hauled in the blast.
Keene senior goalie Danielle Warhall made six saves, frustrating the Warriors throughout the afternoon by intercepting crossing passes and beating Eastern's offensive players to the ball.
Eastern visits Trinity College Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference match.
