Men's Basketball: Unbeaten Williams College Awakens in Second Half, Sends Warriors to Consolation Game of Union College's Sig Makofski Tournament

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Williams College outscored Eastern Connecticut State University 19-6 over five minutes midway through the second half – getting baskets from five different players early in the run -- to send the Warriors into the consolation game of the 31st Union College Sig Makofski Tournament with an 82-71 loss Saturday afternoon at the Viniar Athletic Center.

Sunday, Eastern (1-4)  faces SUNY Cobleskill (0-4) in the 2 p.m. consolation and Union (1-1) meets Williams (4-0) in the final at 4 p.m. Union won for the first time in its last six games in its own tournament, defeating Cobleskill, 75-64, in Saturday's second first-round game.

Eastern  shot 63.3 percent and led by five at halftime before Williams (4-0) limited the Warriors to 26.7 percent in the second half, scoring on an assortment of easy layups set up on back door passes and pick-and-rolls, and open jump shots.

Trailing by seven, Williams tied the score at 54-all eight minutes into the second half on an inside bucket from Daniel Aronowitz and took the lead for good, 56-54, when Michael Kempton dropped in an uncontested basket on a pick and roll with 11 minutes left.

Aronowitz led four Williams double-digit scorers with 28 points (12-for-18 FG), helping the Ephs to a 57.6 field goal mark in the game. Bobby Casey followed with 18 points (7-for-11 FG), five assists and four rebounds.

Junior guard Tarchee Brown (Rockville) sparked Eastern to a 44-39 halftime lead with 17 points (7-for-9 FG), but he was limited to one field goal and four points on 1-for-9 shooting from the floor after the break.

Sophomore guard Tyrell Arnum (Bloomfield) had 14 points for Eastern and freshman point guard Carlos Gonzalez (Springfield, MA) five assists and only one turnover in 32 minutes. Senior forward Hugh Lindo (Enfield) led both teams with eight rebounds, moving to within 19 of 1,000 in his career.

The Warriors played one of their best first halves of the early season Saturday, sinking 19 of 30 field goals and turning the ball over only five times. Paced by Brown, seven different players contributed to the scoring and seven grabbed at least one rebound.

In that first half, first-year junior transfer Kendall Marquez (Willimantic) came off the bench to score all six of his first-half points over the final 2:14. Brown scored five early points on his only three-pointer of the game and a driving layup off a steal by senior center David Canny (Torrington) to stake the Warriors to an early 7-3 lead and Eastern led by five in the early going before Williams pulled even, 17-17. With Eastern trailing by one, Marquez scored the final six points over the final two minutes to stake the Warriors to a five-point, 44-39 lead. In that final spurt after Williams missed two free throws, Marquez sank the third of three free throw attempts, then swished a three-pointer, and following a Williams turnover, connected on a baseline drive with five seconds left in the half.

In the loss, Eastern turned the ball over only 11 times, battled the taller Ephs on near-even terms on the boards and outscored Williams by eight from the foul line, but Williams' decided shooting advantage proved to be too much to overcome.
