Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Luis Vega (Willimantic) pitched 3 2/3 hitless innings and Chad Adams (Ware, MA) broke a tie with a two-run, two-out triple in the top of the eighth inning to lift the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team to a 7-5 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Sunday morning at Lake Myrtle Park.
A winner of three straight since an opening loss in Florida, Eastern (6-1) blew an early four-run lead but rallied for the go-ahead runs in the eighth after Oshkosh (0-6) tied the game, 4-4, with two runs in the fifth.
The Warriors staged their go-ahead rally in the eighth after there were two out and none on. Leadoff hitter Ryan Hood (Arlington, MA) got it going with a single and went to third on D.J. Scavone's (Auburn, MA) single to right. Adams then greeted new pitcher Max Keough with a two-run triple to center to push Eastern into a 6-4 lead.
A double by Tim Budd (Cheshire) and an outfield error handed Eastern an insurance run and a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth before the Titans got one back on two hit batters, a walk and a pitcher's throwing error. Sam Kosterich (Stamford) recorded his fourth save in five outings this year with a game-ending strikeout.
Vega (1-0) replaced Chuck Vogt (Windsor Locks) while Oshkosh was tying the game with two runs in the fifth. He did not allow a hit before giving way to Kosterich with runners on the corners.
Hood, Adams, Alex Parkos (Meriden), Budd and Alexander White (West Hartford) all had three hits for Eastern in its 14-hit attack. Alex Zachary (Enfield) drove in two runs and Hood scored two.
Eastern faces the College of St. Scholastic Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Auburndale.
