Box Score 2 MANSFIELD, Conn. – Alexa St. Angelo drove in five runs and collected seven hits as the University of Massachusetts Boston swept a Little East Conference softball doubleheader from Eastern Connecticut State University Sunday afternoon at the Eastern Softball Stadium.
UMass Boston (13-7, 3-1 LEC) scored seven runs in its final two at-bats in defeating Eastern (7-13, 2-2 LEC) in the opener, 8-4, for the first time after 40 consecutive losses in the series, then built a seven-run lead after its first four at-bats and held on for a 9-8 victory to complete the sweep and end the Warriors' four-game winning streak.
In Sunday's first game, four batters in the heart of the UMass Boston order combined for 11 hits, seven runs scored and six RBI. Eastern led 3-1 before the Beacons scored four times in the sixth – three of the runs unearned – on three hits and three Eastern errors.
In the nightcap, six consecutive batters reached safely in the first inning as UMass took the lead that it would not give up by scoring three times, with No. 4 hitter Roxanne Vento and St. Angelo each doubling in a run, with St. Angelo's blast to left-center field chasing Eastern starter Samantha Valentine (Ridge, NY).
Vento drove in five runs in the second game, four coming on a fourth-inning grand slam that pushed the Beacons' lead to 8-1. The Warriors battled back with five runs to cut the deficit to three entering the seventh. Summer Cipriani's (North Stonington) triple and Taylor Smyth's (Meriden) ground ball pulled the Warriors to within a run in the seventh, but Morgan Bishop got a game-ending swinging strikeout on a full count to end the game and record a three-inning save.
St. Angelo had three doubles among her seven hits for UMB on the day, with Vento recording five hits – including two doubles and the home run – and driving in a tea-high six runs. Gia Raczkowski reached safely six times with three hits – including a solo home run in the second inning of the nightcap– and scored six times. St. Angelo and Vento are freshmen.
In a doubleheader which featured 44 hits – 15 of them for extra bases – and nine errors, Cipriani drove in five runs for Eastern with a double, triple, and two singles. Gina Georgetti (Milford) and Cipriani each contributed four hits. Two of Georgetti's hits were doubles. She scored twice and drove in a run in the seventh inning of the first game.
