Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Staff ace Jackson Volle faced only five batters over the minimum in his seven-inning stint -- giving up only six hits without a walk -- as the Amherst College baseball team ended a five-game losing streak at the hands of Eastern Connecticut State University with a 3-1 non-conference victory Thursday afternoon at Memorial Field.
The loss is the second in two days against a regionally-ranked opponent for Eastern (13-7), which had won five straight heading into Wednesday's 15-3 home loss to No. 7 Suffolk University. Eastern is ranked second in New England, Amherst (16-4) third in New England and No. 14 in the ABCA national rankings.
Volle (5-0), a junior righty, scattered six singles, fanning four. Eastern's only run against Volle came in the second when the Warriors took a 1-0 lead on junior centerfielder Alex Zachary's (Enfield) leadoff bunt single, an error, fly ball and sophomore first baseman DJ Scavone's (Auburn, MA) infield ground ball.
The first of four Eastern pitchers, Eastern 6-foot-4 inch, 240 pound freshman righty John Parker (Brunswick, ME) allowed runs in only one of his four innings. Parker escaped a jam in the second, retiring the final two batters to leave two runners in scoring position before Amherst scored the only two runs it would need in the third on three singles and a sacrifice bunt.
Amherst commited three errors but four pitchers did not walk a batter and the hosts turned a double play to end the fourth after consecutive one-out singles by freshman leftfielder Alexander White (West Hartford) and Scavone and sealed the win with a game-ending double play in the ninth to erase the possible tying and go-ahead runs after Scavone had doubled with one out and senior catcher Tim Budd (Cheshire) had singled.
Junior rightfielder Pat Sirois (Cromwell), Scavone and Budd each had two hits in Eastern's nine-hit attack.
The win was only the second for Amherst in the last 15 games in this series, Eastern holding a 12-2-1 advantage.
Eastern returns to Little East Conference play Saturday with a noon road doubleheader at Plymouth State University.
