Box Score 2 PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Three days after losing on a walk-off hit, the Plymouth State University baseball team won one with a game-ending home run as the Panthers completed a Little East Conference doubleheader sweep of Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon at Panther Park.
After breaking a tie with four runs in the eighth in a 7-3 first-game victory, Plymouth (14-11, 5-1 LEC) walked off with a 2-1 second-game victory on cleanup hitter Jarek Krajewski's two-out solo home run in the bottom of the ninth. The sweep for Plymouth over Eastern (13-9, 4-2 LEC) is the Panthers' first in this 81-game series.
Eastern, which was never able to score more than a single run in an inning, has lost four straight since being elevated to the No. 2 ranking in New England last Monday.
All three runs in the second game came after there were two out and none one. The team batting leader, Krajewski had belted a two-out solo home run to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the fourth. The Warriors tied the game with a run in the sixth when cleanup hitter D.J. Scavone (Auburn, MA) doubled to right and rode home on freshman DH Alex Parkos (Meriden) single to center. Eastern senior righty Patrick O'Neill (Thomaston) – who had entered the game in the eighth and induced an inning-ending double play – retired the first two batters in the ninth before Krajewski launched his third home run of the season to end the game.
Freshman righty Jordan Muchin (West Hartford) and O'Neill combined on a six-hitter in the loss, neither walking a batter. Muchin fanned five and allowed only five hits before giving way to O'Neill (2-2) in a 1-1 game with one out and one on in the eighth. Muchin gave up only one earned run to lower his staff-leading to 1.46. He has fanned 24 with only five walks in 24 2/3 innings this year.
Plymouth scored the final six runs of the first game to wipe out Eastern's late 3-2 lead. The hosts tied the game in the seventh on Jake Broom's two-out RBI single. Freshman lefty Nick Rascati (Wallingford) replaced sophomore lefty Jacob Smith (East Longmeadow, MA) and promptly picked off Broom to keep the game tied but was ineffective in the eighth when Plymouth broke the tie by batting around and scoring four runs on five hits. The bottom third of the PSU order produced the runs, combining to drive in all four with two singles and a bases-loaded walk.
Parkos, sophomore middle infielder Mike Funaro (Northford) and junior centerfielder Alex Zachary (Enfield) all had three hits on the afternoon for Eastern, with Parkos driving in two and Zachary accounting for two of Eastern's three first-game runs with a solo home run in the third and two-out RBI single in the fifth. Junior shortstop Christian Budzik (Cromwell) also reached safely three times on walks in the first game.
On the day, Krajewski was 4-for-8 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored. Five additional Plymouth hitters collected two hits each, with sophomore catcher Cam Ruziak – the No. 9 hitter – driving in three runs in the first game.
Eastern hosts Western Connecticut Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a conference game.
