Box Score 2 WALTHAM, Mass. -- Sophomore righty Ali Reilly pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the opener and freshman Ashley Tango and senior Caitie Benoit slugged back-to-back home runs in a seven-run third inning in the second game that powered Babson College to a 2-1, 13-5 non-conference doubleheader sweep of Eastern Connecticut State University Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The second game was stopped after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
A winner of nine of its last ten, Babson (22-11) scored the winning run in the first game on a game-ending RBI double from freshman catcher Annie Quine after freshman rightrfielder Josephine Mares had singled to open the inning against complete-game loser Samantha Valentine (Ridge, NY).
Eastern (12-18) had tied the first game with its only run off Reilly (12-8) on senior All-America Alyssa Hancock's (Waterford) sacrifice fly that plated freshman rightfielder Kayla Santos (Peabody). Santos had opened the inning with a single, moved up on a pass ball and to third on No. 9 hitter Kelsey Mosher's (Oxford, MA) sacrifice bunt.
Valentine gave up 12 hits and a walk but stranded ten Babson baserunners and the Warriors played perfect defense behind her. With the score tied 1-1 in the fifth, Babson put runners on second and third with none out, but Valentine escaped with a strikeout, infield ground ball and foul popup.
Santos doubled her season hit total in the doubleheader with four hits and her first career extra-base hit (double). Junior catcher Kristyn Ryan (Barkhamsted) also had four hits, including two doubles.
Mares had five hits and scored three runs for Babson, which has beaten Eastern four straight times since the Warriors won the first four in the series. Quine had four hits, drove in four runs and scored three and Benoit had four hits and platted three.
Eastern hosts the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
