Box Score 2 PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Junior Rebecca DeFeo (Exeter, RI) drove in her first two runs of the season – the second one a two-out single that snapped a sixth-inning tie in the second game– as six-time defending Little East Conference champion Eastern Connecticut State University completed a sweep of Plymouth State University with an 8-7 triumph Saturday afternoon at D&M Park.
In the first game, senior Emily Komornik (Shelton) and junior Summer Cipriani (North Stonington) combined on a six-hitter and Komornik slammed a two-run home run in a four-run fourth inning in a 5-2 victory for Eastern (7-11, 2-0 LEC) over Plymouth State (7-11, 0-2 LEC).
Cipriani (4-4) was credited with both pitching wins in relief. She got the final out when Plymouth was scoring the first two runs of the first game in the third inning, and after the Warriors took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth, came back to close out the win with the final two scoreless innings.
As the third pitcher in the nightcap, Cipriani entered the game while Plymouth was scoring seven times in the third to take a 7-4 lead, and pitched the final 4 2/3 innings. She did not allow a run over her four full innings, spacing three hits. With Eastern leading by one, Cipriani allowed a leadoff single in the seventh but later got a game-ending 6-3-5 double play to end the threat.
Five of Eastern's 18 hits on the day went for extra bases, with Komornik and senior Samantha Rentz (Griswold) each smacking their first home runs of the season. Senior All-America Alyssa Hancock (Waterford) had four hits (including a triple), and reached twice on walks. DeFeo was 3-for-3 and Cipriani and junior Samantha Bardos (Norwalk) each had two hits and walked twice. Junior Danielle Robillard (Swansea, MA) had two hits and drove in two runs and senior Taylor Smyth (Meriden) reached three times with two hits and a walk.
In a pair of doubleheader sweeps the last two days (three wins by one run), Komornik is 6-for-14 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI and has given up only two earned runs in 11 2/3 innings over two pitching starts.
Eastern hosts the University of Massachusetts Boston in a makeup doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m.
