SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Twenty-four Eastern Connecticut State University individuals amassed a collective total of 29 personal bests when the men's and women's teams competed in the Springfield College Massasoit Track & Field Invitational Saturday at the Springfield Field House.
In a six-team non-scoring meet also involving Amherst College, Lehman College, Trinity College and Westfield State University, 18 Eastern women combined for 22 PRs, while six individuals totaled seven PRs for the men.
Included in the PRs was sophomore Haley Knox's (Bristol) women's program indoor record of 3:16.77 in the 1,000 meters. Knox was third among 21 competitors in the race. Knox's previous best of 3:23.79 came at Boston University last February.
On the afternoon, the Warriors won four events. For the men, senior tri-captain Lawrence McGill (New Haven) was first among 20 in the 400 (52.27), All-New England sophomore Chidebe Ndibe (West Hartford) captured the long jump (20-5 ¾) in a field of 12, and sophomore Matt Pinney (Mansfield) claimed first among 16 participants in the shot (42-6 ¾).
For the women, the 4x400 relay of freshman Hayley Brodeur (Old Saybrook), sophomores Fanto Faro (New Haven), Knox and junior tri-captain Rachel Berkowsky (Stoughton, MA) bested a field of six in a time of 4:25.94.
Setting multiple PRs for the women were freshmen Savannah Johnson (Ledyard), Jennifer Grabill (Lisbon) and Brittany Kriley (Fair Lawn, NJ). Johnson posted her best times of the season in the preliminaries of the 60 (8.63) and in the 200 (28.35) and long jump (14-11 ½); Grabill in the 200 (32.10) and in the preliminaries of the 60 hurdles (10.71); and Kriley in the 200 (29.72) and in both the preliminaries and final of the 60 hurdles (10.82).
In addition to Knox in the 1000 and the 4x400 relay, top finishers for the women included senior tri-captain Mariah McPhee (Bristol) and senior Lauren Polansky (Milford), sophomores Samantha McKosky (Deep River), Faro and Christina Gosselin (Old Saybrook), and freshman Ahriyan Brown (New Britain). McPhee was sixth among 26 in the mile (PR of 5:43.87), Polansky second among ten in the weight (PR of 43-1 ½) and fourth among 18 in the shot (33-7 ½), McKosky third among 21 in the 3000 (PR of 11:02.32), Faro fifth among 17 in the 400 (1:04.56), Gosselin fifth among 21 in the 1000 (3:25.07) and Brown sixth among 35 in the 200 (PR of 27.66). In a field of 29 in the 60, Brown missed by .02 qualifying for the final.
In addition to the men's three individual winners, top performances included seniors Jason Bindner (Milford) and tri-captain Adam Pszczolkowski (Colebrook). Binder competed in two running and two field events. He was second among 12 in the long jump (20-1 ½), third among 13 in the high jump (PR of 6-0), sixth among 22 in the 60 (PR of 7.33), and ninth among 24 in the 200 (24.26). Pszczolkowski took fourth in the 16-person shot put field (37-7 ¾).
Eastern competes at the University of Rhode Island Coaches' Tribute Invitational Saturday at 11 a.m.
