Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Freshman Matthew Stoots' game-winning double with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning spoiled an Eastern Connecticut State University ninth-inning comebabck and propelled the University of Rutgers-Camden to a 6-5 win Wednesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.
After Eastern (3-1) tied the game with four runs in the top of the ninth with the help of three doubles, Camden (4-4) won the game in the bottom of the ninth on a leadoff walk, wild pitch and Stoots' game-ending double to left-center eluded the dive of senior All-America centerfielder Alex Zachary (Enfield).
In the Eastern ninth, doubles by freshman leadoff batter John Mesagno (Tappan, NY), Zachary and sophomore cleanup hitter Alex Parkos (Meriden) pulled Eastern to within 5-3, a wild pitch plated junior Mike Funaro (Northford) to make it 5-4, and sophomore William Coleman's (Northford) single drove in first-year sophomore Cory Baldwin (Cromwell) with the tying run.
Sophomore righty Brian Hnatuck (Trumbull) pitched the first four innings in his first start of the year without figuring in the decision. Sophomore righty Jason Staub (Portland) lost his first decision after walking the first batter of the ninth and giving way to junior righty Sam Kosterich (Stamford), who threw a wildl pitch and got a strikeout prior to the game-ending double.
Eastern faces Framingham State University Thursday at 12:45 p.m. at Auburndale.
