Box Score WINTER HAVEN – Senior All-America centerfielder Alex Zachary (Enfield) and senior rightfielder Pat Sirois (Cromwell) each had three hits, scored two runs and drove in two and the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team scored the final four runs of the game in a 10-6 win over Benedictine University Sunday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Stadium.
In an errorless game that featured 24 hits, Eastern (6-2) went ahead for good, 7-6, in the bottom of the fifth inning on Sirois' bunt single, junior first baseman D.J. Scavone's (Auburn, MA) single to right, and junior third baseman Collin Russell's (Sandwich, MA) sacrifice fly, and added two more in the sixth en route to its third win in the final four games of the trip.
The Warriors scored five runs in the bottom of the second to take a three-run lead on Scavone's RBI single and Zachary's two-run single through the right side. Freshman catcher Jake LeFevre (Mansfield Center) and sophomore leftfielder Alexander White (West Hartford) each walked with the bases loaded in the inning.
Zachary reached four times on the day with two singles, a triple and hit-by-pitch and Sirois reached four times with a double, two singles and a walk. White, Scavone and Russell each also had two hits, with Russell droving in two runs.
The second of five pitchers, sophomore righty Brian Hnatuk (Trumbull) was credited with the win in a two-inning stint despite giving up five hits and three earned runs. He benefited from Eastern's go-ahead run in the fifth. Freshman righty Sam Gagnon (Andover), sophomore lefty Nick Rascati (Wallingford) and junior righty Sam Kosterich (Stamford) closed out the win, combining on four hitless innings, fanning three and walking two. In two innings, Rascati did not allow the ball out of the infield, striking out two.
Senior DH Nick Severino's two-out, three-run pinch home run in the top of the fifth inning tied the game for Benedictine (3-4) before the Warriors answered with the tie-breaking run in the bottom of the inning on Russell's sacrifice fly.
In six relief appearances in Florida, Rascati did not allow an earned run in 8 1/3 innings, fanning ten with two walks and earning a save; sophomore righty Cole Ogorzalek (Portland) had a 2.00 ERA in nine innings over three relief appearances, winning both of his decisions. Sirois batted .455 (15-of-33) with 11 runs and eight RBI, Russell .385 (5-of-13), Zachary .383 (13-of-34) with nine runs and seven RBI, and senior infielder Christian Budzik (Cromwell) .375 (6-of-16).
The date of Eastern's northern-opener has not yet been confirmed.
