Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. – Close games normally favor the home team, but not in the women's lacrosse series between Eastern Connecticut State University and Connecticut College.
Tuesday evening, Eastern (6-2) capitalized on a Conn (1-5) turnover in the final two minutes to pull to within one goal, but couldn't turn a second Conn turnover into a tying one inside the final 30 seconds as the Camels came away with a 10-9 non-conference victory over the Warriors, winning by a single goal for the third time in the last four meetings between the clubs at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
Although the game featured four ties and Eastern never trailed by more than two goals over the final 47 minutes, the Warriors led only once – for only 68 seconds – as their five-game win streak came to an end by losing for the first time at home after two victories.
A winner of all 11 matches in this series which began in 2004, Conn ended an overall 11-game losing streak which extended back to April of last year. Until Tuesday, Conn's last win had come April 2, 2016 against visiting Tufts University, 14-13. Two of Conn's losses this year have come to Top 20 teams.
Eastern trailed after the first five minutes before netting the first two goals of the second half to move into its only lead since the opening goal. Three minutes into the second half, senior defender Devyne Doran (South Kingstown, RI) converted her team's only free-position goal off a Conn turnover, and junior attack Jenna Glynn (West Granby) capitalized 12 seconds later when junior midfielder Paige Schneider (East Lyme) corralled the ensuing draw and potted her fifth goal of the season off of sophomore attack Michelina Pinto's (Groton) pass to make it 7-6, Eastern.
Conn answered quickly and decisively, however, with the next three goals in a span of last than five minutes. The Camels' tying and go-ahead goals came directly off draws won by sophomore midfielder Jamie Navoni. With Conn leading 8-7, Navoni won a third straight draw but Eastern senior goalie Taylor Emmerson (Colchester) kicked out two successive shots to keep it a one-goal game before the Camels completed a clear and got what amounted to a clinching goal from senior scoring leader Tina Balzotti that made it 9-7 with 21 minutes left.
With Eastern down by three goals midway through the first half, Schneider and junior attack Katie Burke (South Windsor) authored three straight goals to tie the game for the second time, 5-5, but the Camels took a one-goal lead into the lockerroom on junior midfielder Madison Barker's first goal of the season with 1:07 left, set up when freshman midfielder Clara Bisson forced a turnover and recovered the ground ball.
Conn junior goalie Meg Raskin made two saves over the first 30 minutes and left with the 6-5 halftime lead, while junior Megan Mullin came on to stop five shots in the second half. Emmerson made eight saves.
Limited to two goals over the first 35 minutes, Balzotti scored Conn's final three goals in a span of 15 minutes to finish with five. No other Conn player had more than one. Navoni won five draws and freshman attack Kirby Heffrin (Marblehead, MA) came off the bench to win three. Navoni also won four ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Burke notched six of Eastern's seven assists – a career-high – while Schneider (4) and Pinto (3) were the Warriors' multiple scorers. Schneider was Eastern's only player two win more than one draw – she had two – as the Camels dominated with a 14-7 advantage in that department. Eastern defenders Taylor Pendergast (South Windsor), Taylor Behn (Amherst, NH) and Katie Calnen (Granby) each won three ground balls for Eastern.
Eastern hosts Farmingdale State College Saturday at 2 p.m. in a non-conference match.
