Box Score 2 MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Eastern Conn State University softball team parlayed one earned run into a non-conference doubleheader split with Wesleyan University Tuesday afternoon.
Julie McDonald and Rachel Kantor combined on a six-hitter in Wesleyan's (9-13) 3-1 first-game win, but the Cardinals' six errors made all of Eastern's runs unearned in the Warriors' 6-2 second-game victory.
Freshman shortstop Sara Pisanelli (Wallingford) collected three of Eastern's ten second-game hits and freshman first baseman Haleigh Cardello (Litchfield, NH) drove in the first two runs of her career with RBI singles in the second and fourth.
Senior righty Samantha Valentine (Ridge, NY) and freshman lefty Morgan Sanson (Thomaston) combined on a second-game six-hitter, Valentine (2-4) winning her second straight decision by taking a 5-0 lead into the fifth inning. She gave up five hits and one earned run in 4 1/3 innings, fanning one without a walk. Sanson limited the Cards to one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings, fanning two and walking one.
Valentine drove in her first run of the season in the second inning of the nightcap to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Cardella made it 2-0 with a single later in the inning and 3-0 with another single in the fourth. Samantha Bardos' (Norwalk) RBI single made it 4-0 and an infield error made it 5-0 in the fourth.
Sophomore DP Calli Duthrie (Griswold) had two hits in the first game and Pisanelli drove in the team's only run in the third which cut Wesleyan's 2-0 lead in half. Freshman lefty Jacky Arndt (Chelmsford, MA) allowed six hits and only one earned run in the first-game loss, fanning two and walking three.
Eastern hosts Springfield College Wednesday in a 3:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
