Baseball: Warriors Break Out, Rout Suffolk University in Non-Conference Victory

Box Score

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team broke a three-game losing streak by scoring at least once in five of the first six innings in an 11-5 non-conference win over Suffolk University Wednesday afternoon at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.

Eastern (11-7), which had lost three straight at home following an opening win, used a 15-hit attack, led by sophomore Alex Parkos (Meriden) and senior Alex Zachary (Enfield), with three hits apiece. Parkos, starting at third base for the fifth time this season, had three runs batted in and centerfielder Zachary chipped in two RBI.

Sophomore righthander Cole Ogorzalek (Portland) pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of two-hit relief for his third win in as many decisions. Ogorzalek came on in relief of starting pitcher, sophomore John Parker (Brunswick, ME) with two outs in the top of the fifth and Suffolk staging a rally. Down 7-1 entering that fifth inning, Suffolk (11-7) had two runners on base and a run already in when Ogorzalek took over. Suffolk junior leftfielder Seth Coiley knocked an RBI single to greet Ogorzalek, who followed by getting senior catcher Matt Brenner on an inning-ending fly ball to center..

In his fifth start, Parker gave up only one walk while facing only 10 batters through three innings, but lost command of the strike zone in the fourth, when he issued three straight walks to start the inning. With Ogorzalek warming in the bullpen, Parker induced a 5-4-3 double play, trading Suffolk's first run of the day for two big outs.

Eastern started the scoring right away in this game, sending nine batters to the plate in the first inning. With one out, sophomore leftfielder Alexander White (West Hartford) doubled to left field, followed by a single by Zachary. With runners at second and third, Parkos singled to drive in both runs, putting the Warriors up 2-0 early. After the second out of the inning, sophomore designated hitter Devin Belenski (Woodbridge) walked and junior first baseman D.J. Scavone (Auburn, MA) reached on an error, allowing Parkos to score an unearned run and giving Eastern a 3-0 lead after one inning.

At left: Jordan Muchin (middle) and Alex Zachary (right) were honored prior to the game for throwing a no-hitter (Muchin) and breaking the program's consecutive game hitting streak (Zachary) in the home-openers April 2.  The pair were joined in the photo by head coach Matt LaBranche.

Eastern scored twice more in the second when Zachary started a two-out rally with a single and a stolen base. Parkos singled to drive in Zachary, moving to second base on the throw home. Senior Pat Sirois (Cromwell) singled home Parkos to jump Eastern's lead to 5-0 after two innings. Zachary drove in two runs with a bases loaded single in the fourth inning, thwarting any momentum Suffolk may have gained from scoring their first run in the top half of that inning. After scoring a single run in the fifth inning, Eastern scored three more times in the sixth inning to move out to an 11-3 lead.

Trailing 11-3 entering the ninth inning, Suffolk had a rally going against freshman right-hander Sam Gagnon (Andover), scoring two runs off of four hits and a walk, before sophomore left-hander Nick Rascati (Wallingford) induced the final out of the game.

Coiley led Suffolk with two hits and two RBI on the day. In his second start of the year (his first lasting less than four innings), sophomore righty Charles Batchelder (0-2) allowed ten hits with five walks and was charged with seven earned runs before departing with two outs in the fifth.

Eastern hosts Amherst College Thursday at 6 p.m. in a non-conference game.
