Box Score 2 BOSTON – The Eastern Connecticut State University softball team scored twice in the top of the seventh on two hits and two errors for a 2-1 Little East Conference victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader and record the program's 1,000th victory in its 41st season.
Eastern (5-11, 3-1 LEC) completed the sweep when it scored four times in the third to expand a one-run lead on the way to a 6-4 triumph. Freshman Sara Pisanelli (Wallingford) and senior Samantha Bardos (Norwalk) each drove in runs with hits to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead in the second, and Eastern tacked on four insurance runs in the third on four hits and an error, with senior Kristyn Ryan (Barkhamsted) driving in the first run with a single and Pisanelli plating three (two RBI) with a two-out, bases-loaded single and outfield error which cleared the bases.
In relief, senior righty Samantha Valentine (Ridge, NY) gained credit for her first win in five decisions, allowing only one hits with two strikeouts over the final two innings of the opener. Freshman lefty Morgan Sanson (Thomaston) earned her first collegiate win in her fourth decision in the nightcap. In relief of Valentine, Sanson tossed the final 3 1/3 scoreless innings, scattering two hits. Sanson got the final out of the fourth after UMass (14-6, 1-3) had pushed across three runs to cut Eastern's lead to 6-4.
In the opener, junior Jessica Seymour (Barkhamsted) was 3-for-3 and freshman Teresa Marchitto (Orange) 2-for-3. Ryan cracked three hits and scored two runs in the second game, with Pisanelli reaching three times by going 2-for-2 with three RBI and a walk.
Eastern visits Wesleyan University Tuesday in a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
