Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. – Junior Lauren Goetzman scored her second goal of the season 5:37 into sudden death overtime to lift the Wesleyan University women's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference win over Eastern Connecticut State University Tuesday night at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
The win snaps Eastern's (4-4-2) three-game winning streak, while Wesleyan (4-2-1) won for ony the second time in its last five games. Six of Wesleyan's games this year have been decided by shutout, the Cardinals winning for the fourth time.
Goetzman's game-ender was a 25 yard drive off a feed from Sophia Linguiti. It was the sixth shot of the contest for Goetzman, but the only one reached the net.
In her first career start (fourth appearance), sophomore keeper Erin Collins (Millis, MA) made five saves and kept Wesleyan off the board through regulation. Until the game-winning, Wesleyan's most dangerous scoring bid was authored by Goetzman, when she sailed a second-half shot off the top of the crossbar with 17 minutes left in regulation.
Taking over at halftime, Wesleyan keeper Zoe Cassels-Brown won her third game against two losses, lowering her goals-against average to 0.49 with 51 shutout minutes. She made only one save.
Wesleyan outshot Eastern, 16-4.
Eastern hosts Plymouth State University Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Little East Conference match.
