Softball: Warriors Score Early But Not Often Enough in Pair of Losses in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KISSIMMEE, Fla. --The Eastern Connecticut State University softball team was limited to six hits in losses to The College of New Jersey, 10-1 in five innings, and Ithaca College, 6-1, Tuesday at the Osceola County Softball Complex.

Eastern (1-5) scored its run in each game in the first inning, ending a run of three straight shutouts by TCNJ (7-2), but was shut out the rest of the way in both game, sending the Warriors to their third and fourth straight losses.

Eastern's run against TCNJ came on a leadoff double by freshman utility player Morgan Bolduk (Vernon) and a two-out RBI double by sophomore shortstop Sara Pisanelli (Wallingford), but the Warriors managed only a second-inning double by sophomore catcher Megan Hodgdon (Cheshire) and an infield single to short by Pisanelli in the third the rest of the way.

TCNJ senior righty Sam Platt (2-0) struck out five and walked two in her five-inning route-going performance and was supported by a nine-hit attack. Leading 3-1, the Lions batted around in the fourth, scoring five runs on four hits and three walks. Lauren Conroy had two hits and three RBI for the winners and No. 9 hitter Elyse Nardozza drove in two runs with two singles.

Against Ithaca (4-2), a one-out walk to freshman centerfielder Alexis Tyrrell (Torrington), single by Pisanelli, and sophomore second baseman Jackie Lewis' (Mystic) sacrifice fly gave the Warriors a short-lived lead in the top of the first before the Bombers scored three times in the bottom of the inning on four hits – three of them doubles.

Ithaca collected six doubles in the game – three by leadoff hitter Gabby Laccona and two by cleanup hitter Alex Wright – among its 11 hits. Freshman righty Beth Fleming handcuffed Eastern on two singles, both deflecting off the gloves of infielders. Fleming retired 16 in a row beginning with Lewis' sacrifice fly in the first and continuing until Tyrell's infield single to third base with two out in the sixth. Fleming fanned seven and walked one and faced only four batters over the minimum.

Thursday at Kissimmee, Eastern faces Oswego State at 9 a.m. and Ramapo Colledge at 11:15 a.m.
