Baseball: Against Judges, Muchin Hurls Shutout in Home-Opener for Second Time

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Eastern Connecticut State University junior righty Jordan Muchin (West Hartford) threw a shutout in the home-opener for the second straight year, following last year's no-hitter with a four-hitter in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Brandeis University in the first game of a doubleheader at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.

In the second game, All-Region junior third baseman Alex Parkos (Meriden) drove in four runs with a second-inning three-run home run as part of a six-run inning and a fourth-inning sacrifice fly to give him his fifth multi-RBI game this year in a 10-5 victory.

Both games were seven innings.

Eastern (7-4) has won its last four and improved to 21-11 all-time against Brandeis (2-8). It marked the first doubleheader in the series bewteen the Warriors and Judges, which dates back to an NCAA Northeast Regional game in 1976.

Muchin (1-1), who threw the program's most recent no-hitter in last year's home-opening 10-0 win against Plymouth State, fanned seven without a walk against Brandeis, facing only four batters over the minimum.

In three starts, Muchin has a staff-best 1.27 ERA and has walked only one batter with 26 strikeouts in a staff-leading 21 1/3 innings.

Muchin spaced four singles en route to his third career complete game and third shutout and his tenth career victory. He allowed  two-out singles in the second and seventh, a leadoff single in the third, and a one-out single in the fifth. No runner reached third base.

Senior first baseman D.J. Scavone (Auburn, MA) had a two-out RBI double in the first inning behind Parkos' two-out single and that one-run margin stood until sophomore DH Jake LeFevre (Mansfield Center) singled in junior leftfielder Ryan Hood (Arlington, MA) in the fifth. Hood was hit by a pitch with one out, stole second and rode home on LeFevre's single.

Scavone and Brandeis sophomore rightfielder Dan O'Leary were the only players on either team with more than one hit.

In a game which did not feature a walk, Brandeis sophomore righty Albert Gutierrez went the distance in his second start of the year. Gutierrez (0-2) allowed only six hits and fanned two.

Trailing 2-0, Eastern batted around against Brandeis sophomore righty Jackson Carman in the second, with a sacrifice fly by No. 9 hitter Mike Funaro (Northford) the only out among the first eight batters.

Senior catcher Merlyn Herrera (La Yaquiza, DR), making his first start since March 12 due to injury, drove in the first run with his first RBI of the year, and senior DH Collin Russell (Sandwich, MA) made it 3-0 with a single before Parkos unloaded his second home run of the season to make it 6-0. All three batters who walked scored in the inning.

Freshman centerfielder Dan Frey's second home run of the season with two out in the first staked Carman to a quick 2-0 lead, and after Eastern's six-run second, the Judges cut the gap to 6-5 by scoring three times in the third on consecutive RBI hits by freshman third baseman Mike Khoury, sophomore shortstop Victor Oppenheimer and Frey.

While three Eastern relievers combining on a two-hitter over the final 5 2/3 innings, the Warriors tacked on three insurance runs in the fourth and another one in the fifth. Junior centerfielder Alexander White (West Hartford) plate two with a single, Parkos one with a sac fly and Russell with a single.

Russell had three hits, two runs and two RBI, Herrera two hits, two runs and an RBI, and White two hits and two RBI.

Khoury and Frey each had two hits for Brandeis in the second game.

As the second of four pitchers, sophomore righty Drew Alexopoulos (Hanson, MA) gave up only one hit in 2 2/3 innings for his second win in as many decisions. In 6 2/3 innings in a staff-high six appearances, Alexopoulos has a 1.35 ERA.

On the day, five Eastern pitchers fanned 16 batters without a walk.

Eastern hosts Johnson & Wales University Sunday at 1 p.m.
