Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. – Six different players contributed at least one goal in an 11-1 explosion over 20 minutes as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team won its sixth game in seven contests with an 18-6 Little East Conference victory over Western Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
Eastern (7-6, 2-1 LEC) scored the first three goals of the match and was never headed in its fourth straight win and 22nd in 25 meetings all-time against Western (3-9, 0-3 LEC) The Colonials have lost seven straight.
Leading 6-3 with eight minutes left in the first half, the Warriors went on an 11-1 tear over 20 minutes. They closed out the first half with a 5-1 (Western scoring the final goal inside the final minute) run to move out to an 11-4 lead at the break, and senior attack Amanda Tourjee (Waterford) scored her second and third goals of the season to spark a quick 5-0 run in the opening seven minutes of the second half to help her team roll to a 16-4 lead.
Despite featuring three 30-goal scorers, Western was limited to only 25 shots in the game, 11 in the second half when it managed only two goals.
Nine Eastern players contributed a goal or assist, led by senior attack Jenna Glynn (West Granby) and sophomore attack Alyssa Powers (Ellington). Each had four goals and Glynn led all players in the game with seven points on the strength of her goals and three assists. Powers had five points, and senior midfielder Maggie Bodington (Stratford) and senior attack Katie Burke (South Windsor) chipped in four points each. Burke had two goals and two assists and Bodington three goals and an assist.
With four points, Burke moved into seventh place all-time at Eastern with 192 points and her two assists pulled her to within an assist of becoming the third player in program history with as many as 100 assists.
Bodington won half of Eastern 16 draws, helping the Warriors to a 16-10 advantage in that category. After Western won nine of 16 draws in the opening half, Eastern dominated the second, winning nine of ten. Senior defender Katie Calnen (Granby) of Eastern led all players in the game with six ground balls and caused three turnovers, as did sophomore midfielder Tristan Kijak (Windsor).
Freshman defender Caroline Galligan and sophomore midfielder Brooke Baldelli, each a 30-goal scorer this year, combined to evenly score all of Western's goal, while fellow 30-goal scorer Lauren Bradshaw, a junior middie, managed two assists but was held to one shot and no goals.
Freshman defender Mackenzie Kaiser (Northford) won four of Western's ten draws and Galligan, Bradshaw and junior defender Molly Gallagher (Bethel) combined for 14 of the Colonials' 26 ground balls.
Junior Jessica Purick (Riverhead, NY) stopped five shots and left with a 17-4 lead, with freshman Sarah Farag (Holmdel, NJ) closing out the win by making four saves over the final 18 minutes in her third career appearance.
Eastern hosts Keene State College Saturday at noon in a conference match.
