Baseball: Team Effort Carries Warriors Past Elms College in Non-Conference Victory

Box Score

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Sophomore righty Jack Risley (Willimantic) pitched five innings for his first career win, freshmen Anthony Stigler (Mansfield) and Jack Rich (Meriden) belted their first career home runs and freshman Jordan Botte (Branford) had his first hit and RBI in the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team's 22-2 non-conference win over first-time opponent Elms College Thursday afternoon at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.

A winner of four straight and nine of 12, Eastern (18-11) batted around twice, scoring six runs in the second and eight in the fourth. Elms (11-22) has lost four of six.

Risley (1-1) won his first decision in his eighth career appearance (second start), allowing six hits and both runs while fanning two and walking two. Freshman righty Tom Myjak (North Haven), the fourth of five Eastern pitchers, pitched a scoreless eighth inning in his first career appearance.

Stigler slammed his first career home run leading off the second and Rich ripped a three-run home run in the sixth for his first career blast after being inserted as a pinch hitter in the fifth and playing left field.

A late-inning replacement in center field, Botte had his first hit (single) and RBI in the eighth.

Led by senior first baseman D.J. Scavone (Auburn, MA) and Stigler, ten different Eastern players had hits, 11 scored runs and 11 drove in runs, with six collecting multiple hits and RBIs in an 18-hit attack with included seven extra-base hits.

Scavone reached four times with two doubles, a single and walk, drove in three runs and scored two, while Stigler was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI. Rich was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Senior second baseman Mike Funaro (Northford), sophomore DH Drew Alexopoulos (Hanson, MA), and senior catcher Merlyn Herrera (La Yaquiza, DR) all had two hits and two RBI, with Funaro and Alexopoulos scoring twice. Funaro also walked three times as he reached base five times and junior corner infielder Alex Parkos (Meriden) was walked three times, drove in two runs with sacrifice flies, and scored two.

Sophomore corner infielder Tom Slane drove in both Elms' runs with a two-out, two-run single in the fifth – as the only Elms player with more than one hit -- after Risley had pitched four scoreless innings. Risley threw 40 of his 69 pitches for strikes.

Eastern returns to Little East Conference play with a noon doubleheader at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Saturday.
