Warriors in Command on Opening Day, Post Shutout Victories at Winter Haven

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WINTER HAVEN -- The Eastern Connecticut State University softball team was in total command on opening day, the Warriors downing Gettysburg College, 3-0, and  the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 8-0 in five innings Sunday afternoon at Diamondplex.

In her first start, sophomore Morgan Bolduk (Vernon),  last year's Little East Conference Rookie-of-the-Year pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in an opening win over Gettysburg College (4-2). The righty faced only seven batters over the seven-inning minimum. In addition to allowing a leadoff single in the fifth and one-out single in the sixth, she walked two, with three batters reaching on infield errors. She did not allow a hit through the first four innings and did not walk a batter after the second.

In her first two career games, freshman shortstop  and cleanup hitter Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven) reached base five times with a home run, double, two singles and a walk. She drove in five runs against CMSV (0-2) with a two-run single in the first, solo home run leading off the third, and two-run double in the fourth. Against Gettysburg, the cleanup hitter singled in her first collegiate at-bat and later walked.

Juniors Haleigh Cardello (Litchfield, NH) and Morgan Sanson (Thomaston) combined on the shutout against CMSV. Cardello allowed both of the Dolphins hits while fanning four  over the first three innings. Sanson walked one and fanned one in finishing up the five-inning game. Sophomore Alexis Tyrrell (Torrington) had two ground rule doubles and walked and scored twice with an RBI against CMSV.

Against Gettysburg, Eastern scored all of its runs with two out. Senior Jackie Lewis (Waterford) singled and scored the first run in the second on No. 9 hitter Calli Duthrie's (Griswold) single; junior Megan Hodsdon (Cheshire) walked and scored on Tyrrell's single in the fourth;  and Cardello walked with two out and pinch runner Crysta Wolski (West Hartford) scored the team's third run in the fifth on Lewis' double.

Gettysburg qualified for last year's NCAA tournament by winning the Centenniel Conference tournament title and finishing with a 25-16 record.

Monday at Kissimmee, Eastern faces Montclair State University at 9:30 a.m. and Westminsterat 2 p.m.
