Freshman No-Hits Warriors, Who Complete Encouraging Florida Trip With 7-3 Record

Box Score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. --   In her third career start, freshman Scotty McGee threw her first career softball no-hitter as Carnegie Mellon University blanked Eastern Connecticut State University, 10-0 in five innings Friday afternoon at Diamondplex.

McGee (2-1) did not allow a ball out of the infield, fanning nine, hitting two and walking one in facing just three batters over the minimum for the Tartans (4-6), a first-year program. She struck out the final four batters that she faced. Eastern finishes its Florida trip at 7-3.

Earlier in the day, Morgan Bolduk (Vernon) and Morgan Sanson (Thomaston) combined on a four-hitter in a 3-0 win over the College of Wooster.

Carnegie Mellon battered three Eastern pitchers for 11 hits – two of them home runs and two of them doubles. Cleanup hitter Piper Johnson had three hits for the winners, including a three-run home run in the top of the first. She scored three times and stole two bases. Audrey Peterson also belted a three-run home run in a four-run fifth.

Trailing 3-0, Eastern put a runner in scoring position for the only time in the game in the bottom of the first when freshman Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven) was hit by a pitch with two out and freshman cleanup batter Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange) walked, but McGee got a called strikeout to the Warriors' only threat.

Leadoff hitter Alexis Tyrrell (Torrington) had the closest thing to a hit when she lined to third base for the second out of the third inning.

Eastern hosts the University of Southern Maine a week from Saturday in a doubleheader in its northern, home and Little East Conference openers at 1 p.m.
