Rhode Island's Comeback Spoils Warriors' Bid for Little East Conference Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Emma Simmons' timing was perfect. Hitless in her first seven at-bats in the doubleheader, the centerfielder hammered a walk-off, two-out grand slam to cap a miracle comeback as the Rhode Island College softball team stunned Eastern Connecticut State University, 13-10, to gain a split of their Little East Conference doubleheader Tuesday  evening at the Dayna Bazar Softball Complex.

Trailing 10-3 in the second game after being mercied, 17-7, in five innings of the opener, Rhode Island (8-6, 1-1 LEC) scored ten runs in its final two at-bats on eight hits, two Eastern (13-5, 4-2 LEC) infield errors and a walk. The final seven runs scored by RIC were unearned.

Rhode Island scored all of its seventh-inning runs after there were two out and one on. Three straight singles made it 10-9 before Simmons launched her game-ending homer after flying out to the outfield and reaching on a walk in her previous four plate appearances in the game.

On the day for Eastern, freshman Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange) had six hits – two of them doubles -- and six RBI – junior Crystal Wolski (West Hartford) five hits – three doubles -- four runs scored and four RBI , with six additional players adding three of the team's 33 hits on the day.  Senior Jackie Lewis (Mystic) and freshman Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven) each had two doubles among their three hits.

Junior shortstop Sara Pisanelli (Wallingford) became the 45th player in program history to reach the 100-career hit plateau with her second hit of the first game – a three-run home run in an 11-run fourth inning.  She had three hits, three runs and five RBI on the day.

Eastern visits Wesleyan University Wednesday for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
