Softball: Warriors Unload 11 Hits in Opening Win En Route to Non-Conference Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWPORT, R.I. – Sophomore righty Morgan Bolduk (Vernon) pitched a complete-game four-hitter for her tenth pitching win of the season without a loss in a 4-2 win over Salve Regina University in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday evening at Toppa Field.

In the second game, sophomore righty Jaycee Garrigan (2-2) tossed a two-hit shutout in Salve's (19-18) victory. Garrigan struck out five without a walk, hitting three batters and committing an error to open the game to allow the first of six baserunners.

Bolduk gave up only one earned run while striking out three without a walk becoming only the third pitcher in the last 35 years to win as many as ten straight decisions to open the season, following All-Americas Molly Rathbun (22-0) in 2011 and Christia Mohan (14-0) in 1990. Mohan was named national Player-of-the-Year during that 1990 national championship season.

The top six hitters in the Eastern lineup combined for nine of Eastern's 11 hits, scored three runs and drove in three.

Eastern (23-9) scored twice in the top of the third to take the lead for good. After losing pitcher Andi Nelson (14-7) fanned the first two batters of the inning, sophomore Alexis Tyrrell (Torrington) tripled and scored on senior Jackie Lewis' (Mystic) single. Freshman Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange) plated Lewis with a double. Junior Sara Pisanelli (Wallingford) made it 3-1 with an RBI single in the fifth and the Warriors pushed the lead to 4-1 in the seventh on pinch hitter Kat Devolve's (Plainfield) single sent in Pisanelli, who had doubled with two out.

Junior righty Haleigh Cardello (Litchfield, NH) pitched into the sixth inning in the second game, allowing eight hits and all three Salve runs. Cardello (6-4) walked one and fanned one.

Pisanelli had a leadoff single in the second and Lewis a two-out single in the third for Eastern's only hits off Garrigan.

Tyrrell, Matyasovsky, Pisanelli and freshman Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven) all had two hits in the first game.

Eastern hosts Keene State College in a Little East Conference makeup doubleheader Thursday at 4 p.m.
