WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph women's and men's swim teams won all but three individuals event and coasted to a sweep of Eastern Connecticut State University Tuesday night at the Sports Center Pool. The women's score was 163-96 and the men's 143-47.
For the men, Aaron Gauvin, Brendan Lynch and Jacob Wyse all won three individual events and Lynch, Gauvin and Wyse teamed with Kevin Hobbel on the winning 200 freestyle relay.
For the Eastern men, senior Forest Rappe (Glenwood Springs, CO) took seconds in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. On the first-year men's team, Rappe was competing in his first and last home meet.
Freshman Jake Lachniet (Windsor) took the team's only first, winning the 50 breaststroke 34.42. He was also second in the 50 freestyle.
For the women, Shelby Cios won three individual events and Alexia Weir and Alisa Martel two each for the Blue Jays. The trio also teamed with Leah Verrillo on the winning 200 medley relay.
For Eastern, juniors Tegan Ruschmeier (Vernon) and Kerry-Rose Buchanan (Southington) each won events. Ruschmeier won the 100 butterfly (1:12.37) and Buchanan won the 1000 freestyle (12:00.60). Ruschmeier was also second in the butterfly and Buchanan was edged by .33 in the 500 freestyle.
In the final race of their careers, seniors Lauryn Smith (Colchester) and Callan Veltheim (New London) swam the third and fourth legs, respectively, on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:57.58) in the women's final event of the night. Veltheim also took second in the 50 freestyle.
Freshman Jordan Allen (Westerly, RI) swam the fastest times of her one-year career in all three of her events: 50 breaststroke (37.40) and 100 breaststroke (1:23.31), and 50 freestyle (31.24), making the 'A' Cut qualification in the 50 breaststroke. In the 100 IM, all three Eastern swimmers posted their fastest times of the season: Smith (1:13.55), Veltheim (1:17.21) and freshman Julia Keller (Torrington) (1:22.73).
Eastern closes out the regular season Saturday at Babson College in a tri-meet which includes Roger Williams University.
