Women's Swimming: Warriors Dominate in Dual-Meet Victory over Blue Jays

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. --  The Eastern Connecticut State University swim teams won 22 of a possible 28 events in dual-meet victories over the University of Saint Joseph Saturday afternoon at the Bruyette Natatorium.
 
The Eastern women won their second dual meet in three tries this year with a 202-77 victory over Saint Joseph (2-5), winning 11 of 12 races and both relays for their 42nd dual-meet victory over the Blue Jays in 44 meetings.  Senior Natasha Frisch (Mendota Heights, MN) and junior Cassandra Wentzell (Wallingford) both won two individual races each plus participated on one winning relay apiece, while first-year swimmer Rachel Mathews (West Hartford) was also a double winner.
 
Coming off last Friday's dual-meet victory at Keene State College, the Eastern men won their third dual meet of the year without a loss, remaining undefeated all-time in four duals with Saint Joseph (3-4). The men won seven of 12 individual races and both relays.  Junior Ryan Jezek (Avon) and first-year swimmer Spencer Bagtaz (Wilmington, MA) – last week's Little East Conference Swimmer and Rookie-of-the-Week, respectively – each won two individual races, with Jezek also swimming the opening leg of the 200 freestyle relay.
 
The Eastern women went  1-2 in 11 races and 1-2-3 in seven while the men captured the top two spots six times.
 
For the women, Frisch won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.97) and 100 individual medley (1:06.33) in addition to swimming the breaststroke (second) leg of the 200 medley relay (1:57.55); Wentzell swam the third leg of the 200 freestyle relay to go along with winning the 100 (1:07.50) and 200 (2:23.95) backstroke events; Mathews claimed the 100 (1:00.75) and 1000 (11:52.51) freestyle races.
 
For the men, Jezek swam the opening leg of the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.95) and took the 100 (49.33) and 200 (1:51.54) freestyle races, while Bagtaz was the winner of the 100 backstroke (58.70) and 500 freestyle (5:26.93).
 
Eastern closes out the regular season Saturday at noon against Norwich University on Senior Day before competing in the Little East Conference Championships Feb. 12-15 at the Boston Sports Institute.
