Men's Soccer: No. 21 Babson Halts Warriors' Two-Game Winning Streak

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Three Babson College players scored their first goals of the season and the Beavers limited the Eastern Connecticut State University men's soccer team to four shots and two corner kicks in a 3-0 victory Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Ranked 21st nationally and second in the USC Region II, Babson (8-3-3) posted its fourth shutout during its current five-match (2-0-3) unbeaten streak. Eastern (8-6-0) fell to 2-5-0 away from home and to 4-5-0 outside of the Little East Conference. The match was the last out of conference one for Eastern, which closes out the regular season with three Little East Conference contests over the last 11 days of the season.

The Warriors had beaten Babson twice in the previous three meetings between the club – including a 2-0 home win during its 17-3-0 season in 2019 – but was beaten at Babson's home field for the fifth straight time since recording consecutive one-goal road wins over the Beaves in 2009 and 2010.

Seniors Robert Dunne and Liam Hanlon  both finished with a goal and an assist for Babson. Junior Rodrigo Madiedo also scored and classmate Jack Dugan added an assist. Senior goalkeeper Itai Rubin needed only one save in 85 minutes to pick up his eighth win of the year.

Sophomore Dylan Pallanck (Willington) stopped four shots and left on the short end of a 2-0 verdict over 80 minutes before first-year keeper Nathan Yeich (Willington) closed it out without being credited with a save.

Babson opened the scoring on Dunne's goal in the 39th minute. Hanlon regained possession in the midfield and found Dunne, who took a touch to his right and ripped a low shot through traffic that curled inside the right post.

The Beavers doubled their advantage in the 59th minute thanks to Hanlon. Dugan carried the ball down the right flank and floated a cross into the box for Hanlon, who drove his header into the upper right corner from inside six yards.

Madiedo capped the scoring with his first career goal, a low 25-yard strike that beat Yeich with six minutes remaining.

Two of Pallanck's saves prevented further damage. He punched Babson first-year player Nate Rouette's  bid from the top of the box over the bar in the 45th minute to keep it a one-goal game, and came off his line to get a hand on junior Nicholas Beigel's chance from 15 yards in the 70th minute with the Beavers already up by two. First-year defender Alexander Voigt (Miami, FL) then headed the rebound chance by Dunne out of danger.

Eastern travels to Plymouth State University in a Little East match Saturday at 3:30 p.m. One of four teams in the conference with one loss, Eastern is 10-1-2 against the Panthers in the last 13 meetings but was beaten at Plymouth by a score of 2-1 in the last meeting in 2018. Plymouth is 1-6-0 in the LEC, 2-9-0 overall.

Western Connecticut and Rhode Island College share the LEC lead with 15 points , with UMass Boston third with 13 points and Eastern fourth with 12 (4-1-0). Western and UMass Boston have played six LEC matches each, Rhode Island seven and Eastern five. The Warriors defeated both RIC and UMass Boston earlier this year and lost at Western Connecticut.
