Men's Swimming: Freshman Scully Wins Two Events In Only In-Person Meet of Year

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Led by junior Quint Kimmel's three first-place finishes, seven different individuals won events to carry the Keene State College men's swimming team to a 178-60 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday morning at the Sports Center pool.
 
In all, Keene (2-0) swimmers claimed ten of 12 firsts in individual events, and also won the 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. In addition to swimming the final leg of the 400 freestyle relay, Kimmel won the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle.
 
In the 200 freestyle, Kimmel prevailed in a neck-in-neck decision over Eastern freshman Connor Scully (Oxford), winning by .09 seconds. Kimmel won the 100 freestyle by 1.35 seconds over freshman teammate Ben Stafford and the 500 by 14 seconds over freshman teammate Samuel Galipeau.
 
Junior Tyler Young added 22 points by winning the100 butterfly by just over two seconds over Eastern freshman Elliot Anderson (Goffstown, NH) and the 400 IM by  nearly 27 seconds over Anderson, and was second to Scully in the 100 breaststroke by just over three seasons.
 
Scully was Eastern's only double winner, edging Keene freshman Ben Szum by .31 seconds, totaling 22 of Eastern's 56 points in individual events. In three individual events, Anderson and freshman Nathan Melia (Manchester) each added 11 points, freshman Drew Cavar (Vernon) eight and junior PJ Jimenez (Meriden) four.
 
The meet was the only in-person one scheduled for Eastern (0-1) this year. The Warriors may close out the season March 20 in a virtual meet against Plymouth State University at 1 p.m.
