Women's Swimming: Warriors Win Nine of 11 Individual Events in Routing RIC

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Junior tri-captain Kerry-Rose Buchanan (Southington) and freshman Kelly Schneider (Portland) each won all three of their individual events and swam a leg of a winning relay when the Eastern Connecticut State University women's swim team defeated Rhode Island College, 168-71, Saturday afternoon at the Sports Center pool.
 
The meet was the first in-person one this year for Eastern and first in three weeks, when the Warriors defeated Western New England University, 150-51, in a virtual meet.
 
In addition to winning both relays, Eastern (2-0) captured nine of the 11 individual events, went 1-2-3 in three events and 1-2 in five events.
 
Buchanan and Schneider each totaled 27 points in their three individual events, with freshman Nancy Scanlon (West Hartford) amassing 18 points by winning the 200 butterfly (2:24.61) and 200 IM (2:24.83) and swimming a leg on both relays and senior tri-captain Amanda Mitchell (Rocky Hill) contributed 14 points by winning the 50 butterfly (29.39) and taking third in the 200 butterfly and fourth in the 200 IM.
 
In addition to swimming the meet-ending second leg of the 200 freestyle relay, Buchanan won the 100 (56.86), 200 (2:02.43) and 500 (5:37.21) freestyle events. She set a personal record in the 100 (by more than two seconds) and improved her time in the 500 from three weeks ago against WNE by over ten seconds.
 
Schneider bested the field in the 50 (29.86) and 200 backstroke (2:23.97) and improved her time from three weeks ago by a second in the 50 freestyle (26.93).
 
Six swimmers improved their times from three weeks ago a total of nine times, with freshmen Elizabeth Anderson (Willington), Nicole Sabio (Unionville) and Katey Truncale (Ledyard) all improving their times in two events from the WNE meet and Buchanan, Schneider and Scanlon in one each.

Rhode Island (0-3), which featured eight freshmen on its nine-person roster, got a pair of first-place finishes from freshman Anna Vygoder in the 50 (34.18) and 200 (2:49.45) breaststroke.

The Eastern women and men host Keene State College Saturday at 11 a.m. before closing out the season with a virtual meet against Plymouth State University March 20 at 1 p.m.
