Men's Lacrosse: Keene State Runs Past Warriors in Little East

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Freshman midfielder Colby Quiet had two goals and  an assist and won four faceoffs to spark the Keene State College men's lacrosse team to six consecutive goals in less than seven minutes early in the second quarter as the Owls rolled to their 57th consecutive Little East Conference regular-season victory, 19-6, over Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon at Rick McCarthy Field.

In defeating Eastern (4-2, 1-1 LEC) for the 12th consecutive time, Keene (2-0, 2-0 LEC) got points from 12 different players, using an eight-goal second quarter to pull away to a 12-1 halftime lead.

With senior midfielder Tyler Stein (Milford) winning 14 of 18 faceoffs, Eastern owned a +11 advantage in that category, but was stopped on all four of its extra-man tries (0-for-3 in the decisive second quarter), and three Keene State goalies combined to make 16 saves, with senior starter Chase Chamberlin stopping 12 of the 13 shots on net in the first half.

With Keene leading 4-1, Quiet scored twice in six seconds, winning the faceoff and taking it himself after his first goal, then assisting on the final of the six straight goals that made it 10-1 with seven minutes left in the first half.

Starting attackmen Joe Nutting  and Cooper Cioffi both had three goals and two assists, as did sophomore midfielder Nathan Sickle, who came off the bench.

Stein improved his season faceoff winning percentage to .694 on the afternoon, while freshman David Harrold (Southington) was credited with five wins on nine tries. Stein and senior defenseman Tyler Koppy (Attleboro, MA) both won eight ground balls for Eastern, with freshman LSM Domenic Scarano (Berlin) picking up five and Koppy forcing five turnovers.

One of three faceoff men for Keene, Quiet won seven at the X and picked up six ground balls, with junior defenseman Shane Molloy and senior midfielder Corbin White picking up five ground balls each and Molloy causing three turnovers.

A winner of the last six LEC playoff championships, Keene last lost an LEC regular-season match when it dropped a 14-11 decision to Eastern in early April of 2012 at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

Eastern visits Western Connecticut in an LEC match Tuesday at 7 p.m.
