Field Hockey: Eastern Defense Shuts Down RWU in Warriors' 4th Straight

Liz LaMarco's second goal of year the difference

BRISTOL, R.I. –  Freshman Liz LaMarco (West Hartford) scored the only goal of the match in the final minute of the third quarter and junior goalie Sarah Gallagher (South Windsor) made three saves for her first career shutout as the Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team trimmed Roger Williams University for its fourth straight win of the season  Wednesday evening at Bayside Field.

With its first win over Roger Williams (4-1) in three matches in the series, Eastern (4-1) ties the program record with its fourth consecutive regular-season win. All four of its wins have come by one goal, two extending to overtime.

The breakthrough goal came in the final minute of the third quarter, with LaMarco securing a loose ball on the right side of the arc and backhanding a strong shot over the Hawk defense and into the left corner.

The goal was the first for LaMarco since an opening 5-2 loss at Johnson & Wales University.

Eastern had nearly taken a 1-0 lead just prior to LaMarco's goal with senior co-captain Bryce Makula (Guilford) firing a shot from the left. A strong kick save by RWU senior goalie Callie Flanagan stopped the Warrior chance.

Freshman Amelia Monahan of RWU nearly logged the first goal of the game six minutes into the second quarter, taking a pass from senior Hannah Gaffney  on the right of the goal. She got a stick on the ball, but was denied by Sarah Gallagher.

The Warrior defense, which has given up only five goals in their four victories, held Roger Williams in check for most of the beginning of the fourth quarter, allowing only one shot in the first ten minutes. The Hawks had a good look at a potential scoring opportunity with seven minutes remaining, with Monahan sending a cross in front of the goal and behind the Warrior keeper. Unfortunately for RWU, no one was waiting for the pass as the ball rolled away harmlessly.

The Hawks' final chance to tie the game came in the final minute on a cross from Gaffney to Monahan in the middle of the arc, who would have had a one-on-one opportunity with a Warrior defender. Yet, she was unable to control the pass, which allowed Eastern to clear the ball and let the clock wind down.

The early part of the first quarter saw both sides jockeying for a scoring opportunity. Eastern came close seven minutes into the contest. LaMarco poked a shot from the left side that got past Flanagan, who was coming out to try to deny the opportunity. Fortunately for RWU, senior Erin Magsamen was residing in front of the goal and managed to knock the shot away to keep the Warriors off the board.

Both teams had ten shots, both goalies made three saves and both teams had four penalty corners.

Against Castleton University, Eastern looks for its third straight Little East Conference win Saturday at noon (note time change). The Warriors and Plymouth State University are atop the LEC standings. Castleton (3-5, 1-1 LEC) reached the LEC tournament final in its first season in the LEC in 2018 and has outscored Eastern 18-2 (12-0 in 2018 and '19) in winning all four matches in the series
