Women's Volleyball: Warriors Win First Two Sets of Each Match En Route to Two Non-Conference Victories Over Farmingdale State College

Stern closes in on 1,000th career kill

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Seniors Abby Stern (Manchester), Anna Barry (Andover) and Alaetra Long (Lincoln, NE) combined for 68 of the team's 96 kills and senior setter Meg Verizzi (Lebanon) had 70 assists and 34 digs to power the Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team to two four-set non-conference victories over Farmingdale State College Saturday afternoon at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center.

In each match, Eastern (3-0) captured the first two sets against Farmingdale (0-2) and bounced back from close losses in the third set to comfortably win the fourth set and close out the match.

Eastern won the first match, 25-16, 25-17, 20-25, 25-12 and the second 25-11, 25-20, 24-26, 25-16.

In the close-out set in the first match, Verizzi  had nine assists and six digs and junior Nayeli Cruz Martinez (Toa Baja, P.R.) three kills without an error. In the fourth set of the second match, Verizzi had 12 assists and nine digs, Barry and Long four kills each and junior libero Paula Pérez (Caguas, P.R.) six digs.

Stern had 25 kills to move to within 66 of becoming the tenth player in program history with 1,000 career kills, while Long had  20 digs after exceeding the 1,000-dig mark in Wednesday's season-opener against Roger Williams University.

Barry had 24 kills and attacked at .259 and Long added 19 kills. Perez followed Verizzi with 29 digs, Stern adding 21 and freshman Cassie Parmelee (East Berlin) 18 digs. Barry also had six blocks and Martinez and Stern four service aces each. In addition to her digs, Perez was perfect on 34 reception attempts, Long was successful on 34 of 37 (.919) receptions and Parmelee handled 15 attempts with just one error.

Eastern competes at the Trinity College Invitational this weekend, facing Trinity Friday at 7 p.m. and Simmons College (10 a.m.) and Westfield State University (2 p.m.) Saturday.
