BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- In the first meet of the season Saturday, three members of the Eastern Connecticut State University men's swim team broke program records and the women's and men's team combined to win nine individual events and two relays at Bridgewater State University's Dr. Mary Jo Moriarty Pool.
Both Eastern teams defeated Regis College and lost to host Bridgewater State University. The women won, 116-79 and lost, 119-110; the men won 137-50 and lost, 123-79.
Sophomores
Joseph Sylvester (Morris) and
Connor Rego (Winsted) broke their own records in the 1000 freestyle (10:56.57) and 200 individual medley (2:10.74), respectively, and junior
Nathan Melia (Manchester) broke junior teammate
Jae Pinilla-ODea's (Madison) record with a time of 2:15.06 in the 200 backstroke. Sylvester won his event while Rego and Melia were third in their events.
Sophomore co-captain
Ben D'Addario (Fairfield) won the 100 (51.45) and 200 (1:55.44) freestyle races and Melia, first-year swimmer
Sam Hurlburt (Meriden), Rego and D'Addario combined to capture the 200 medley relay (1:43.52.
The women also claimed the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:00.46 with the team of sophomore
Allison Ronan (Northbridge, MA), first-year team member
Natasha Frisch (Mendota Heights, MN), and juniors
Nancy Scanlon (West Hartford), and
Kelly Schneider (Portland).
Individually, Ronan won the 200 individual medley (2:25.29) and 200 backstroke (2:22.31), Schneider the 50 freestyle (27.46), Scanlon the 200 butterfly (2:33.88), Frisch the 200 breaststroke (2:54.38) and junior
Jillian Norbut (Bristol) the 1000 freestyle (12:52.21).
Eastern competes in the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Louise Goodrum Invitational Nov. 5 at 11 a.m.
